ESRI's Location-Based Services Developer Community Offers Several Applications to Nextel Subscribers
Subscribers Using i58sr and i88s GPS Handsets
Cloudberry, CompassCom, MobileGates, and Navtrak Now Offer Location-Based
Tracking, Dispatching, Information, and Emergency Services Applications
Redlands, California-ESRI today announced that Cloudberry, CompassCom,
MobileGates, and Navtrak have all successfully implemented ESRI's geographic
information system (GIS) software and Web services into their location-based
applications using i58sr and i88s global positioning system (GPS)-enabled
handsets over the Nextel iDEN network.
"ESRI is pleased to see our developer community offering location-based
applications that make use of the GPS application program interface (API)
available from Nextel," says Jon Spinney, location-based services industry
manager, ESRI. "Our business partner developers are offering tracking,
dispatching, information, and emergency services applications. These
applications are designed to help mass-market, enterprise, and government
mobile users communicate more effectively, help them make better decisions
faster, help them cut costs and streamline their operations, and equip them
with essential geographic knowledge to act quickly in times of emergency."
The Nextel GPS Java API allows application developers to use Nextel's
i58sr and i88s handsets as GPS receivers. In turn, developers are able to
build handset applications that transmit location coordinates over the
Nextel data network to back-office GIS server applications. In the back
office, ESRI's GIS software and Web services can process the location to add
maps, addresses, points of interest, and routing directions to
location-based applications.
"Our Cloudberry tracking application (Air-Trak for Nextel) delivers the
power of ESRI's ArcLogistics Route in a low-cost tracking application that
any i58sr or i88s user may purchase," says Dennis Clark, president,
Air-Trak. "Our technical team's experience and our proven system
architecture, coupled with class-leading ESRI products like MapObjects,
RouteMAP IMS, and ArcGIS, enable us to deliver our Cloudberry easy-to-use
tracking, route management, and fleet management services to the Nextel
network, with the value and low cost that today's users demand."
"We use ESRI's MapObjects and i58sr and i88s to build location-based
applications for federal, state, and local government," says Brant Howard,
president and CEO, CompassCom. "Our applications help public safety and
public works organizations track mobile assets and respond quickly to
emergency situations. Our solution for Nextel subscribers is an inexpensive
first responder application that any i58sr or i88s user may purchase and
deploy in minutes for mission-critical response."
"ESRI's ArcWeb for Developers allows us to focus on our core
location-based technology and customer relationship management (CRM)
infrastructure," says Tony Meador, CEO, MobileGates. "Using ESRI's Web
service, we can provide a rich wireless platform that provides easy-to-use
personalized applications that run on hundreds of handsets including the
i58sr and i88s, With the help of ESRI's easy-to-use Simple Object Access
Protocol (SOAP) interfaces, we free up our resources to focus on
MobileGates' transportation and commerce application service provider (ASP)
services including TrafficMobile for consumers, TruckingMobile for the
trucking industry, and MallMobile, which provides our customers with a way
to generate revenue using a subscription and licensing business model as a
wireless extension to their current Web-based applications. With the
combination of ESRI's GIS Web services and MobileGates' wireless delivery
platform, customers are spared a costly investment in wireless commerce
delivery infrastructure and wireless carrier relationship management."
Navtrak (www.navtrak.net ) currently utilizes
many ESRI products, including ArcLogistics Route and MapObjects, along with
Tele Atlas spatial data to deliver high-value GPS fleet tracking solutions
to the commercial and government marketplaces. "ESRI's GIS development tools
have quickly enabled Navtrak's GPS fleet tracking solutions to work with a
variety of devices including the i58sr and i88s iDEN phone platforms," says
Ron Hodges, CEO of Navtrak. "We are excited to be commercially launching
this solution for the Nextel network in the near future."
