WirelessDevNet.com Press Release
Government Agencies Rely on MapInfo for e-Government Efforts
TROY, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 3, 2003--MapInfo Corporation (Nasdaq: MAPS), the leading provider of location intelligence solutions for the enterprise, today announced that an increasing number of government agencies and other public sector organizations have embraced its location-based software for the development and deployment of e-government initiatives. Agencies including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the International Trade Administration, the City of Tampa and the Arizona Department of Public Safety use MapInfo to enhance their e-government efforts.
Until recently, citizens, businesses and government employees might only have been able to access public information through telephone or written requests, which are inefficient due to the demands placed on staff. Now, using mapping technology and the Internet, organizations at all levels can collect, analyze and disseminate data easily and cost-effectively to all constituencies, even across agencies and jurisdictions. From self-service Web sites that enable citizens to find the closest schools for their children to sites that help businesses find pertinent export information to armed forces recruiting, MapInfo is helping government agencies establish e-government initiatives to improve the accessibility and efficiency of their services.
"The City of Tulsa wanted to create a dynamic Web site that would provide our citizens with easy access to updated information about the community, the City's departments and agencies, elected officials and other resources. MapInfo technology enabled us to visually depict local construction and traffic accidents, providing residents and media outlets with up-to-the-minute information on local traffic conditions," said Brian Bales, IP network specialist, City of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Visual Dissemination of Information
Examples of agencies that leverage MapInfo's location-based technology include:
-- The International Trade Administration (ITA) and the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) use location-based technology to provide 24x7 Internet access to economic data by other government agencies, economic forecasters and chambers of commerce, among others. The ITA's TradeStats Express is a Web site that maps the pattern of U.S. imports and exports at the global, state and regional levels. The BEA uses location-based technology to create maps that depict detailed economic pictures of specific geographic areas, which are then used by state and local governments for economic planning and by businesses to evaluate marketing strategies.
-- Arizona Department of Public Safety used mapping technology to create a Web site that provides information to the public on the location of sex offenders within the state. Rather than contacting local police or city officials, residents can visit this Web site to quickly determine if a convicted sex offender is living in their community.
-- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Injury Center uses location-based technology for Injury Maps, an interactive Internet-based mapping application of injury-related mortality in the U.S. Users can create customized, interactive maps that can be used by organizations and individuals, such as other federal agencies, state and local health departments, policy makers, research institutions and students. For example, a health worker can use Injury Maps to create state or county maps that depict the death rates from several broad categories of injuries as well as create a map of a specific injury cause and compare this to state and national death rates.
-- The City of Tampa used mapping technology to create The Neighborhood Information Page, which provides information for analyzing conditions within Tampa's neighborhoods. Using data derived from multiple sources, including the U.S. Census and Hillsborough County City-County Planning Commission, Tampa-area residents can become more involved in activities such as monitoring a neighborhood's vitality and prioritizing the need for public services.
