Pumatech Introduces TrueSync Server 4.0 Software for Worldwide Wireless Carrier Market

SAN JOSE, Calif.--Nov. 3, 2003--Pumatech, Inc. (NASDAQ:PUMA) New Version Enhances TrueSync(R) Server Solutions Already Deployed In The U.S., Europe And Japan

Pumatech, Inc. (NASDAQ:PUMA), a leading provider of synchronization software and services, today announced availability of TrueSync(R) Server 4.0 software - a SyncML-compliant solution that provides over-the-air synchronization of PIM (personal information management) data across applications, devices and networks. TrueSync Server 4.0 - developed by Pumatech's Starfish Software subsidiary - gives wireless carriers the ability to add value by offering their customers multi-point synchronization services for SyncML phones and Palm OS(R) or Pocket PC handhelds (PDAs).

With TrueSync Server 4.0, carriers can now leverage the broad synchronization support of Pumatech's award-winning Intellisync(R) software to offer their customers the ability to sync with popular desktop PIM applications like Microsoft Outlook and Lotus Notes. In addition, TrueSync Server 4.0 supports synchronization of SyncML devices with Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Domino enterprise groupware, as well as Oracle, DB2 and Microsoft SQL Server databases. TrueSync Server 4.0 also includes a Web-based PIM application that operates as a client to the server, with the ability to store contacts, events, to-do's and tasks.

A Java-based, SyncML 1.1.1-compliant platform, TrueSync Server 4.0 ships with application programming interfaces (APIs) for integration with billing, provisioning, authentication and other network systems. It also provides APIs that generate custom user interfaces for the administration and management of synchronization services. The server runs on JDK 1.3-compatible systems, including Sun Solaris 2.5 and higher, Microsoft Windows Server 2000 and Linux Red Hat 8.

New features of TrueSync Server 4.0 include an enhanced provisioning tool that allows carriers to provision and manage millions of user accounts from within the TrueSync Server solution. Version 4.0 also adds synchronization for Palm OS 5 and Pocket PC 2002 and 2003 PDAs, and lets carriers certify new SyncML devices "on the fly" through a configuration wizard within TrueSync Server.

TrueSync Server 4.0 enables wireless carriers to deploy an industry-leading, SyncML-based client-server platform that has already achieved wide acceptance:

-- Hutchison Whampoa's "3" Network - a global mobile 3G operator - has implemented a solution based on TrueSync Server technology that enables over-the-air synchronization of consumer and corporate enterprise data. The solution is being deployed in Italy, and then will be extended to other markets where Hutchison Whampoa has 3G interests.

-- Hitachi is using TrueSync Server technology in Japan to synchronize its Web-based groupware, named BROADNET BOXER, with PDAs, iCal on Macintosh and Microsoft Outlook on PCs. BROADNET BOXER provides a suite of e-mail, PIM and messaging capabilities - all geared toward streamlining projects involving several contributors.

-- Pumatech is currently working with Sharp Corporation to extend the market presence of TrueSync Server in Asia.

"While there's a proliferation of different, proprietary data synchronization protocols for mobile devices, one of our main objectives with TrueSync Server 4.0 was to capitalize on SyncML as an industry-leading standard by developing a carrier-grade platform for synchronization between devices and applications, and across networks," explained Fay Hellal, Pumatech's director of product management for carrier markets. "We believe that the product's enhanced functionality will enable customers like Hutchison's '3' Network and Hitachi to add value to their services, while also boosting Pumatech's position in the carrier space."

Because TrueSync Server is SyncML 1.1.1-compliant, it natively supports SyncML devices "out of box". Pumatech has certified a number of SyncML devices, in order to support device-specific capabilities and to enhance the user's experience. Certified devices include offerings from Sony Ericsson, Siemens, Nokia, Motorola, NEC and Panasonic.

ABOUT THE SyncML INITIATIVE

SyncML is an industry-leading initiative to develop and promote a single, common data synchronization protocol for communications between devices, applications and networks. The foundation of the SyncML open standard - SyncML Data Sync (SyncML DS) - provides a consistent set of data that is available on any device or application. SyncML Device Management (SyncML DM) enables over-the-air administration of devices and applications, simplifying configuration, updates and support. The SyncML standard is currently sponsored by Sony-Ericsson, IBM, Lotus, Matsushita, Motorola, Nokia, Palm, Psion, Openwave, Starfish Software (a wholly owned subsidiary of Pumatech, Inc.) and Symbian. In November 2002, the SyncML Initiative was consolidated into the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA), contributing its technical work to the OMA technical Working Groups (Data Synchronization Working Group and Device Management Working Group).

ABOUT THE OPEN MOBILE ALLIANCE

The Open Mobile Alliance was formed in June 2002 by nearly 200 companies representing the world's leading mobile operators, device & network suppliers, information technology companies and content providers.
