Aplix's JBlend Technology Passes 30 Million Shipments
SAN FRANCISCO--November 12, 2003--Aplix Corporation, the global leader in deploying Java(TM) technology in mobile phones, today announced that its
JBlend(TM) platform has shipped in more than 30 million mobile phones and consumer electronics devices, as of September 30. Aplix reported in May of this year that shipments of its Java execution platform had surpassed 20 million units. In July 2002, the company reported that shipments of JBlend technology had topped 10 million. In total, JBlend technology has shipped in 61 wireless handset models.
In related news, in October Aplix opened an affiliated company, Aplix Europe GmbH, in Munich, Germany to strengthen its business operations and technical support for international customers, and to support its international expansion. The company earlier established a San Francisco base of operations in the U.S., Aplix Corporation of America, in April 2001.
JBlend technology is incorporated in handsets from eight different wireless operators outside Japan, including Sprint PCS in the U.S., FarEasTone in Taiwan, SmarTone in Hong Kong and Vodafone live! in Europe (where the Sharp GX20 was recently released). Aplix has successfully leveraged long-term relationships with Japanese customers such as Hitachi, SANYO and Sharp, to successfully address these international markets. In addition, the company has won significant international business, seeing its JBlend technology adopted by Alcatel for upcoming Java handsets and by Motorola PCS for the V600.
This success in the international market was built upon the solid foundation the company laid in its domestic market of Japan, where JBlend technology is used exclusively in all Vodafone KK and KDDI Java technology-enabled handsets, and ships in six different models by Sharp and Sony-Ericsson Mobile Communications for NTT DoCoMo's i-mode service.
About the JBlend Platform
The JBlend platform is the de facto solution for running Java applications and services in mobile phones. It includes a high-performance, small-footprint Java virtual machine(TM) for a variety of configurations (CLDC, CDC) and profiles/extensions (MIDP, i-mode DoJa, Vodafone, Sprint and others); and all the porting tools and test suites needed to Java-enable a full line of consumer products. The JBlend platform supports a variety of popular operating systems and microprocessors, and has also been successfully integrated in many digital appliances and embedded devices. JBlend technology offers device manufacturers the following key benefits:
o A field-proven Java platform that is fast, stable, and robust;
o The ability to continue to use manufacturers' existing software resources while adding the key benefits of Java technology, including outstanding scalability and ease of network support and user interface development;
o The ability to significantly shorten the product development cycle, enabling manufacturers to bring their products to market much faster than before.
