Comverse Announces Roaming Support For Prepaid SMS And Data Services

Comverse, a unit of Comverse Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: CMVT), and the world's leading supplier of software and systems enabling network-based multimedia enhanced communications services, today announced its support of Prepaid SMS and Data Services to GSM users who are roaming in other networks. The CAMEL-3 signaling protocol is used to deliver a solution that is both efficient and standards-based. These new features supplement other roaming capabilities available today through the Comverse Prepaid platform, allowing prepaid users to enjoy a wide range of services when roaming in other networks.

EMT Estonia has selected the Comverse Prepaid platform to enable an advanced set of prepaid services to its users who roam. Subscribers are able to make and receive calls, send and receive SMS messages and in the future are expected to enjoy the benefits of wireless data services while roaming. The Comverse solution is real-time in nature, limiting credit risk while at the same time potentially encouraging higher ARPU as a result of a wider array of available services.

"Because the prepaid sector is very important to us, it is vital that we are able to offer advanced services to these users at all times," said Tonu Grunberg, Executive Vice President in charge of Development and Technology at EMT Estonia. "Comverse's standards-based Prepaid platform will enable us to expand our capability to offer real-time billing to meet our customers' usage habits and needs."

Howard Woolf, President of Comverse Intelligent Networks Division, said, "We are delighted to expand upon our leadership role in the delivery of IN-based prepaid services. The availability of our CAMEL-3 solution complements our support of other key Intelligent Network standards. The availability of this technology in the network enables many exciting new features and services to users who roam, consistent with our goal of delivering real-time prepaid billing for all services. This in turn provides operators with another opportunity to potentially increase Average Revenue Per User among members of the prepaid community."

Today's announcement underscores Comverse's ongoing commitment to GSM carriers around the world. This year, many GSM networks currently using Comverse's Real-Time Prepaid System will be upgraded to support CAMEL-3.

About Wireless Intelligent Network and CAMEL-3

CAMEL (Customized Application of Mobile Enhanced Logic) Phase 3 builds on the success of the CAMEL-2 protocol by adding prepaid support for SMS and data services. The use of a standards-based approach to these services ensures compatibility across different networks and makes services available to users who roam.

CAMEL-3 support for SMS allows GSM operators to offer real-time charging for Mobile Originated Short Messages (MO-SMS) without the need for proprietary devices. The Comverse system supports a wide variety of real-time billing options. Charges can be based on the location of the sender, the destination of the message, the date and time, and more.

Similarly, CAMEL-3 allows real-time charging for data services. Comverse offers a wide variety of charging options, including session duration, volume of data transmitted, and the type of data application.

Comverse's Prepaid System is technology-independent and has been deployed to a large number of GSM, CDMA, TDMA and other networks around the world. Scalable to support many millions of active users, it offers one of the richest feature sets in the industry. The Comverse prepaid system operates in a variety of IN and pre-IN environments and allows service packages to be customized to the needs of each local market. The solution is designed to encourage high ARPU through the delivery of advanced service features, while ensuring that user spending does not exceed pre-defined credit limits. Comverse has deployed Prepaid Systems in more than 90 networks in 45 countries and supports more than 30 different languages and currencies.
