WirelessDevNet.com Press Release
LOGICACMG INTRODUCES VIDEO TRANSCODING FOR MMS
October 14, 2003 -- LogicaCMG today announced the commercial availability of its latest
MMSC (Multimedia Messaging Service Centre) release. The new version - MMSC
release 2.0.1 - incorporates the very latest transcoding technology
which optimises the presentation of video MMS messages and even enables
mobile subscribers to receive video messages if they do not have a video
handset. This is a critical development for mobile operators to support
the penetration of video MMS as well as high-value services such as
music and sport clips.
Powerful transcoding is a prerequisite to a convincing MMS user
experience, resolving any differences in multimedia capabilities between the
sending and the receiving handset. It relieves the sender of the worry
that an MMS might not be received properly due to the 'wrong type' of
MMS handset, whilst for the receiver it removes the frustration of
receiving a message that is either poorly presented or not presented at all.
For messages from one video handset to another, the LogicaCMG
transcoding optimises the video content in terms such as frame rate and colour
depth, and transcodes to a different codec if needed, just as it has
been doing for image and sound. For recipients without video capability,
LogicaCMG's MMSC Release 2.0.1 transcodes video content to an animation,
combined with sound. This gives the receiving user a good impression of
the original video. In parallel, the original video message is
forwarded to a mailbox where the user can also view it in full using other
devices including their PC. Depending on the handset capabilities, the
animation is in either animated GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) or
consists of still images timed using SMIL (Synchronized Multimedia
Integration Language). LogicaCMG's MMSC Release 2.0.1 continues its heritage of
messaging interoperability, enabling MMS inter-carrier messaging.
Eric Jan Krupe, Vice President Market Development, LogicaCMG Wireless
Networks, said: "Transcoding is becoming more critical to mobile
operators by the week. We are seeing a drastic increase in the number of MMS
handsets with a wide variety of multimedia capabilities - though to date
only a minority have been able to support high value video services.
The market-leading video transcoding capabilities of our new release will
help operators develop this huge potential market."
LogicaCMG's high performance, high availability MMSC provides an open
interface to external transcoding engines, supported by leading media
processing partners including Mobixell and Philips. This allows LogicaCMG
to stay ahead in transcoding and its MMS solution to work with any
combination of transcoding modules from multiple vendors. Should new market
requirements dictate additional functionality or capacity, additional
transcoding modules can be added to it quickly and smoothly. MMSC
Release 2.0.1 continues to have an architecture that provides high
performance and high availability to mobile operators.
The launch of MMSC Release 2.0.1 further extends LogicaCMG's lead in
transcoding solutions for MMS. It already has a global MMS market share
in excess of 20 per cent, with commercially deployed MMS solutions
servicing over 85 million subscribers around the world. LogicaCMG is the
global leader in messaging and payments, supplying messaging and billing
solutions to 250 of the world's top operators in over 70 countries.
These solutions serve over 500 million active mobile phone subscribers.
