WirelessDevNet.com Press Release

Columbitech Embedded Client API Is First To Deliver Standards-Based Security To Any Wireless Device

NEW YORK--Wireless security software developer Columbitech announced the availability of Columbitech Embedded Client API, which enables device manufacturers to create secure VPN clients for any wireless device that has a non-standard operating system. Columbitech's proven, standards-based solution is a faster, simpler, and less expensive way for vendors to secure their devices than custom-building proprietary security fixes. The API is designed for all wireless devices that previously had no security solution such as wireless cash registers, wireless printers and telematics devices, to name a few. To date, the Columbitech Embedded Client API, integrated with the Columbitech Wireless Suite, is the only way these devices can be integrated in a robust wireless security framework.

By using Columbitech Embedded Client API, customers save costs by extending the lifecycle of their legacy devices by eliminating the need to buy new wireless equipment just to gain security; save resources by not having to design and build custom solutions and at the same time, enable end-to-end security across all devices.

In many vertical industries, such as retail and telematics, there are a number of different devices running on a variety of operating systems. For example, in retail there are devices such as point-of-sale scanners, wireless cash registers and wireless printers. These devices are a mix ranging from legacy-based products using archaic or proprietary operating systems to modern devices using the latest Microsoft operating system, and to date lacked one common security framework to connect to a corporate LAN. With Columbitech's solution, it is now possible to secure all devices without requiring the replacement or purchasing of new devices or customizing proprietary fixes for individual devices.

Devices featuring the new API and Columbitech Wireless Suite will benefit with a cost-effective and low-maintenance way to take advantage of strong security by eliminating security gaps and delivering robust and persistent connectivity, enhanced performance, and secure, seamless network roaming.

"In the various vertical markets, it is key for many customers to have VPN support for all wireless devices, not just for laptops and PDAs," said Pontus Bergdahl, CEO for Columbitech. "This is particularly true for the certain vertical markets, such as the automotive telematics sector and the retail industry. Working with partners, we are already using the Embedded Client API with the Columbitech Wireless Suite to create VPN support for wireless devices."

The technology in Columbitech Wireless Suite already supports clients running on Windows XP, Windows 2000, Pocket PC 2002, Windows Mobile 2003 and DOS. It has been sold to more than 100,000 user licenses that are customers in key vertical markets, including logistics, military, health care and retail.
