Autodesk Location Services Launches OpenLS Draft-Based XML Web Services API

San Rafael, CA — Autodesk Location Services, a division of Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK), today announced the company has launched its location-enabling web services aligned with the OpenGIS® Location Services (OpenLS™) implementation specification.   The OpenLS specification defines a XML-based standard for building location-based applications.  Autodesk LocationLogic™ XML Web Services helps developers to create new, or location-enable existing, applications on the Autodesk Location Services platform, Autodesk LocationLogic™.  Officially adopted by the Open GIS Consortium (OGC), the OpenLS implementation specification is the de-facto industry standard addressing the core geo-services used in location-based services (LBS).  Earlier this year Autodesk was recognized by the OGC as a co-author of the specification.

"The OpenGIS OpenLS Implementation Specification is the result of a great deal of work by many Consortium members. We are pleased that Autodesk has participated in both the consensus development and early implementation of this specification within their product line," said Kurt Buehler, chief technology officer, OpenGIS Consortium.  "Adopted by the Consortium membership in June of this year, the OpenLS specification should be available publicly later this year.  It will no doubt have a positive impact on the marketplace by reducing effort and cost in implementing LBS services to customers."

With Autodesk LocationLogic XML Web Services, developers can work with powerful, yet simple application building blocks within their preferred development environment to develop next-generation location-based services.   The OpenLS services support a range of location applications including directory, mapping and navigation services.  Wireless network operators seeking standards-based solutions look to OpenLS and other industry forums such as Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) to ensure interoperability among an array of various technology and applications.  Autodesk LocationLogic XML Web Services is a vendor-neutral, language-independent API, enabling application developers to implement their solutions in any language on any platform.

"As a co-author of the OpenLS specification, Autodesk Location Services has worked closely with the other members of the Open GIS Consortium to address the interoperability challenge of location-based services," said Joe Astroth, executive vice president of Autodesk Location Services.  "The introduction of this new XML API based on the OpenLS draft is a large step toward ensuring carriers that they can deploy applications from a variety of developers and be assured they will work smoothly together."

The OpenLS specification defines vendor and application neutral interfaces for implementing location service applications that can access directory, route determination, location determination gateway, geocoding, reverse geocoding, and mapping services. The interfaces allow telecommunications companies, telematics service providers, traditional GIS technology companies, and location-based services LBS providers to efficiently implement interoperable LBS applications that seamlessly access multiple content repositories and service frameworks.
