WirelessDevNet.com Press Release
INSIGNIA SOLUTIONS JOINS SYMBIAN COMPANION TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM
FREMONT, CA - September 17, 2003 -Insignia Solutions(r) (Nasdaq: INSG) today announced that it has joined the Symbian Companion Technology Program. As a result, Insignia's royalty-free Secure System Provisioning (SSP) client software will be provided by Symbian alongside releases of Symbian OS to its licensees. Insignia SSP enables phone manufacturers and network operators to securely update phone firmware and to add new phone capabilities dynamically in the field using Insignia's standards-based server software. Symbian develops and licenses Symbian OS, the global industry standard for advanced mobile phones to the world's leading handset manufacturers.
The Symbian Companion Technology Program is designed to stimulate and promote innovation by offering Symbian OS licensees, who include Motorola, Nokia, Samsung, Siemens and Sony Ericsson, a choice of a broad spectrum of pre-integrated and pre-validated technologies to reduce handset time-to-market and commercial risk.
Insignia Secure System Provisioning (SSP) is a server software infrastructure system for mobile operators and phone manufacturers that enables Over-The-Air updates and increases top line revenues by providing Dynamic Capabilities to enable a wide range of new mobile services to existing devices.
New rich media capabilities and industry standards are being rolled out at a frenetic pace, including twelve new mobile Java standards proposals in the past year alone. Insignia Secure System Provisioning enables mobile operators to capitalize on a raft of new revenue-bearing rich content using phones that can be upgraded over-the-air.
"Symbian OS licensees accounted for over 80 percent of global mobile handset sales in 2002, and we believe that inclusion of our royalty-free client software in the Symbian Companion Program will enable many phone manufacturers to easily take advantage of our over-the-air firmware update solution," said Mark McMillan, CEO of Insignia, "Through the Companion Technology Program, we look forward to working even closer with Symbian to create innovative solutions and to help drive even greater demand for Symbian OS-based phones."
"The Companion Technology Program provides our licensees with fast and low risk access to our partners' latest added-value technologies," said Ian Weston, VP, developer partnerships of Symbian. "Working with Insignia will provide our licensees and network operators with the ability to upgrade handset capabilities over the air and enable new functionality to be deployed dynamically in future devices."
The licensing agreement with Symbian will enable the rapid proliferation of mobile phones that can take advantage of upgrade capabilities. In addition, this agreement will speed development time for manufacturers and therefore help reduce overall development costs for Symbian OS licensees.
About the Symbian Companion Technology Program
