palmOne Delivers Market-Leading Mobile Java Runtime to Treo 600 Smartphone and Tungsten Handhelds
MILPITAS, Calif. -- Delivering on its promise of enabling the latest Java(TM) standards on its Treo(TM) 600 smartphones and Tungsten(TM) line of handhelds, palmOne, Inc. (Nasdaq: PLMO - News) today announced general availability of an ARM-processor-optimized Java runtime for end users.
IBM's WebSphere(TM) Micro Environment and its accompanying developer toolkit, WebSphere Micro Environment Toolkit for Palm OS® developers, enables the development, testing, deployment and execution of Java 2 Micro Edition-compliant applications on palmOne(TM) devices. This continues the growing trend of Java enthusiasm in the Palm OS community, as evidenced by the recent announcement from PalmSource®, Inc. regarding its licensing of IBM's WebSphere Micro Environment Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) certified runtime environment and WebSphere Studio Device Developer (WSDD) toolset for integration into the Palm OS platform.
palmOne also is debuting a Java application section on its Software Connection website ( http://software.palmone.com ), powered by Handango. This includes support for standard Palm OS applications, installed via HotSync® operation, as well as Java applications that can be installed wirelessly, over the air.
"Through the new Java runtime, Handango's thousands of Java developer partners can now deliver standards-based applications to palmOne customers without sacrificing speed, functionality or usability," said Randy Eisenman, president and chief executive officer, Handango. "In addition, by expanding the existing Software Connection, Handango and palmOne are significantly growing the market for Java applications."
By quickly extending the benefits of the Java developer community and IBM relationship to the award-winning Treo and Tungsten product lines, palmOne is better-equipping developers to deliver compelling aftermarket business and consumer solutions. Mobile workforces and consumers alike will benefit from a greater number of compelling, standards-based applications, development tools, and solutions. Mobile Java applications run the gamut from clients for sophisticated business systems, to fun and easily downloadable games.
"Delivering Java to Treo and Tungsten products is just the beginning of the tremendous benefits customers will enjoy. Whether it's providing new games for consumers to pass time more enjoyably or making sure a field force always has the latest data when and where they need it, Java makes it even easier for end users and developers to tap those possibilities," Jonathan Oakes, senior director of strategy for palmOne. "We're thrilled to be providing three million plus Java developers the tools and support necessary to build truly great mobile applications."
palmOne can now help meet the demand for standards-based Java-enabled handhelds and smartphones with a more diverse set of capabilities and configurations than its competitors. With both keyboard and stylus data input, brighter and higher-resolution displays, and significant memory enhancements, individual customers and wireless service providers have the best set of product options with the Tungsten and Treo product families.
"Running Java applications on palmOne devices breathes new life and possibilities into existing solutions," Bob Wallace, president of Aircharge®. "palmOne's device lineup enables Java-based solutions to bridge from small displays to large, or from being solely in-the-field deployments to on the campus or in the warehouse."
Whether it's through the Tungsten T3 handheld's high-resolution landscape display or the mobile Internet connection of the Treo 600 smartphone, the potential of Java applications now can be more fully exploited. In addition, the performance of the new runtime is a market leader, with palmOne devices holding 5 of the top 10 fastest published scores on the industry-standard benchmark JBenchmark ( http://www.jbenchmark.com ).
