Siemens installs world’s second largest WAP gateway in China

China Mobile Communications Corporate Ltd. (China Mobile), the largest mobile provider, has awarded Siemens Information and Communication Mobile (Siemens mobile) the contract to set up a WAP gateway installation. With "Mobile Smart Proxy", the company will implement what is currently the world's second-largest WAP installation in the provinces of Guangdong, Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Sichuan in the southeastern part of China. In future more than 100 million mobile phone users will be able to use mobile internet applications via Mobile Smart Proxy.

Mobile Smart Proxy 3.0 allows China Mobile’s mobile subscribers to securely access information on the internet, download images, ring tones, and Java applications, or use online games via their mobile phones. The system capacity of the Siemens WAP gateway enables more than 2400 transactions per second - in comparison, the worldwide average is less than 100 transactions per second. The capacity of the Siemens solution can also be upgraded at any time. Moreover, China Mobile can charge the data content for prepaid customers flexibly and in real time. Both features are important prerequisites for further increasing the use and attractiveness of the mobile data services.

"We have been providing China Mobile with innovative solutions for the mobile network for many years. We will also continue in the future to cooperate closely with the mobile operator, in order to meet the growing communication requirements in this region", said Christoph Caselitz, head of the Networks Division at Siemens mobile. Through this contract, Siemens mobile has reinforced its position as China Mobile’s largest WAP gateway supplier.

The Siemens Information and Communication Mobile Group (Siemens mobile) is one of the world’s leading full-line suppliers in the field of mobile communication, offering mobile phones, cordless phones, wireless modules and mobile infrastructure, as well as all radio and switching modules, consulting services and systems integration. The mobile communication arm of Siemens AG markets products and services in more than 120 countries, generating sales of € 10 billion with a workforce of some 26,900 people in fiscal 2003 (September 30). Siemens mobile is the world market leader in prepaid solutions and digital cordless phones. More: www.siemens-mobile.com/press
