Airpath Wireless And Tropos Networks Partnership to Speed Wi-Fi Coverage Across Entire Metro Regions

WALTHAM, Mass.--Aug. 5, 2004-- Airpath Wireless, Inc., the leader in Wi-Fi management systems and Tropos Networks, Inc., the leading supplier of equipment used to build metro-scale Wi-Fi networks, have formed a strategic marketing and technology partnership to bring ubiquitous Wi-Fi coverage and roaming access across an entire city.

By combining Airpath's operational software, WiBOSS(TM) and the Wi-Fi mesh networking systems from Tropos, the result is a metro-scale all in one solution offering broadband Wi-Fi coverage and high data delivery, with the flexibility and roaming convenience of using one login ID. The partnership already has deployments underway in Nantucket, MA, and other cities to be announced in the near future.

"Wi-Fi is a communications phenomenon that is still in an incredibly exciting phase of its growth, but it is obvious to me that it will deliver many more applications in the future than routine Web and mobile access," said Todd Myers, CEO of Airpath Wireless. "The more we broaden Wi-Fi's ubiquity, the faster it will be embraced. Our strategic relationship with Tropos Networks supports this end goal of broad-based adoption," he added.

The Airpath WiBOSS application provides user authentication and access management to Wi-Fi location service providers. Those service providers then become part of the Airpath Provider Alliance (APA), which allows their users to log on at any other Wi-Fi location operated by an APA member, without changing providers or setting up a new account.

"With this agreement, we are putting together the all-in-one solutions needed to further support the rapid adoption of large, metro-scale Wi-Fi networks," said Bert Williams, Vice President of Marketing for Tropos Networks. "Our joint solution is making it easier for providers to more quickly and easily deploy and manage the business side of running a large Wi-Fi network. Municipalities and other users of such metro-scale Wi-Fi solutions will greatly benefit from this partnership and others in the ecosystem that is being built to support the use of Wi-Fi in large metropolitan areas and communities," he added.

The Tropos cellular Wi-Fi system is based on distributed intelligence. Each Wi-Fi cell, in addition to using Wi-Fi to communicate with standard 802.11 clients, passes data wirelessly back to a Wi-Fi cell gateway, attached to the wired network. The cells continuously monitor the quality of the wireless links and forward traffic in the best path to the wired gateway. In this way, the cells work together to optimize performance across the network.
