Under the terms of the agreement, SiRF and SK Telecom agree to create and jointly market to operators worldwide a new LBS platform based on SiRF's patented, multimode A-GPS SiRFLoc(TM) Server Engine and SiRFLoc Client software. As part of the agreement to support the next generation of LBS applications, SK Telecom will introduce multiple handsets using SiRF's landmark SiRFstarIII(TM) architecture.

LBS: Benefiting Carriers and Users Alike
Seen as a key differentiator by wireless carriers and their subscribers, location based services offer the ability to find your friend or your child, navigate your way around a traffic jam, improve enterprise logistics, and play location based games. "For carriers anxious to provide value added services and boost average revenue per user (ARPU), location holds very real promise," according to Mobile Business News. The market reflects this potential: according to research firm Strategy Analytics, by 2005, the market for LBS will reach $6.5 billion in the U.S., and will top $9 billion in Europe.
