Proteus brings interactive TV/wireless applications to The Olympics
NEW YORK, AUGUST 27, 2004 – Proteus, the United States’ leading provider of wireless applications and carrier connectivity to the content community, has announced that its text messaging applications are powering a variety of AT&T Wireless’ 2004 Olympic-related text messaging activities.
Proteus is supporting AT&T Wireless by providing multiple messaging applications to its subscribers through September 30, 2004. These include a number of initiatives that AT&T Wireless has undertaken with NBC Olympics, including an Olympic Games Trivia program, daily text alerts, a “Guess the Gold” contest, and on-air polling on NBC primetime, Bravo and Telemundo. Additional applications include an Olympic-themed sweepstakes and Fan Mail, where subscribers will be able to send fan mail to any U.S. Olympic Team athlete via text messaging.
“I can think of no other world event that galvanizes people globally as does the Olympic Games, and we are excited to be helping AT&T Wireless provide innovative applications that will both entertain and inform its subscriber base,” said Craig Shapiro, director of wireless services for Proteus. “We will continue to further expand our services into this arena, while looking for new, creative opportunities to take advantage of the growing interactive entertainment sector.”
McDonald’s Olympic Games Trivia
Olympic Games-related trivia has appeared on more than 250 million pieces of McDonald’s packaging encouraging AT&T Wireless subscribers to participate in a weekly trivia game. This marks the largest text-messaging application of its kind in the U.S., and is just one example of extensive trivia applications involving NBC that has been provided to AT&T Wireless subscribers.
Olympic Games Sweepstakes
An Olympic Games-themed sweepstakes that began in June is running through September. The objective of the sweepstakes is to drive education, awareness and usage of text messaging and MMS messaging to wireless subscribers. Once opted-in, every SMS and MMS that a subscriber sends will automatically earn them additional sweepstakes entries.
On-Air Polling
Proteus is the technology provider behind AT&T Wireless’ on-air polls on NBC, Bravo and Telemundo during NBC’s Olympic Games coverage on these platforms. These polls feature a question and multiple answers, along with an associated “short code” which viewers can use to send their answer.
Text Alerts
For the duration of the Summer Games, subscribers can sign up for a premium text messaging alert service, which will inform them of the number of medals won by the U.S. Olympic team, including recent results news and other highlights from NBC.
Additionally, subscribers can participate in NBC’s Guess the Gold, a text-messaging game in which they can predict the winners of the different athletic events. To learn more, visit www.attwireless.com/usolympics.
