Sarantel Miniature GPS Antenna Selected by SAVOX for TETRA Personnel Location Module
WELLINGBOROUGH, England--Jan. 22, 2004--Antenna specialist Sarantel has been awarded a contract to supply its miniature GPS antenna to high-reliability communications specialist SAVOX for use in its track-mate GPS module. The new track-mate, developed in Finland, provides precise GPS location ability to Nokia's THR880 TETRA terminal.
The Sarantel GeoHelix antenna was chosen for its ability to receive global positioning system (GPS) signals safely and clearly when the antenna is located close to the human body and in the presence of other much stronger radio signals. The Nokia THR880 TETRA handsets, for which track-mate is designed, are used by the UK's emergency services as part of its major communications systems upgrade.
Mikael Westerlund, Sales Director at SAVOX said, "We selected the Sarantel antenna because when combined with the TETRA and GPS processing technology we were using it offered the best operational performance; reliability is critical to the markets SAVOX serves."
Barrie Foley, Sarantel CEO said, "Using technological advances to improve the safety and speedy recovery of members of the public is obviously an important task for both governments and legislators. The close to the body performance of our antennas provides a real advantage in this field and we are very pleased that SAVOX has selected us for such an important product."
Foley, concludes, "This application really portrays the importance of choosing the right antenna for saving lives, Sarantel has successfully helped address the accuracy issues for mobile communications caused by inadequate antenna technology products."
About Sarantel
Founded in September 2000, UK-based Sarantel (www.sarantel.com) specialises in miniature antennas for portable and mobile wireless devices, including GPS and Wi-Fi, as well as GSM, PCN and PCS mobile telephones. Built on 20 years of research effort, Sarantel Ltd is a privately funded company formed from the management buyout of the Symmetricom Inc. antenna division. The company recently had a first close on its $10m series B funding round. MTI Partners (www.mtifirms.com) led the round, joined by series A investor, VCF Partners (www.vcf.co.uk), and eTechnology VCT (www.etchvct.com).
Sarantel's antennas are based on high-dielectric miniature ceramic cylinders onto which a copper track is etched. Compared with the conventional antennas used in portable wireless products, Sarantel's devices have a much wider beamwidth, meaning better reception, and make the receivers less susceptible to the de-tuning effects of the user's hands and head. The company has pioneered a highly cost-effective automated volume manufacturing process at its Wellingborough, UK, facility. In addition to offering its antennas to OEM manufacturers, Sarantel licenses the design and manufacturing process to high volume manufacturers around the world.
