WirelessDevNet.com Press Release
BIO-key's PocketCop(R) Selected in Homeland Security Grant Award by Massachusetts Law Enforcement
MINNEAPOLIS, July 9 -- BIO-key International, Inc.
(OTC Bulletin Board: BKYI), the leader in finger-based biometric
identification and wireless public safety solutions, announced that
PocketCop(R), its wireless data access solution for police officers, was
selected by the North Eastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (NEMLEC)
and its members. This initial order to BIO-key under the contract is an
estimated $150,000. PocketCop, a product of BIO-key's Public Safety Division,
provides high-speed wireless access to Federal, state, and local criminal
justice and law enforcement databases.
The NEMLEC infrastructure was built through Department of Homeland
Security grants totaling over $3.5 million and administered by the
Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety. These funds were used to
build a network that allows NEMLEC's 48 member communities to receive homeland
security alerts, AMBER alerts and mobile law enforcement data at advanced
speeds. BIO-key has been the recipient of a number of contracts in recent
months that have been funded through the Federal Homeland Security Department.
In a report published by Civitas Group LLC, a Washington, D.C., advisory and
investment services firm, "State and local government spending on homeland
security will account for $3.8 billion in 2005, about $2.7 billion of which
will come from federal grants".
The network is being expanded to include mobile data services for local
cities and towns to promote interoperability, eliminate parallel networks,
enhance officer safety and provide regional cost savings. The benefit to the
police and the community is faster access to information by the officer or
first responder chartered with protecting the public.
"We have built a wonderful network with the initial homeland security
grant," said Bedford Police Chief, James Hicks. "It makes sense to take that
network to the next step and let it be the backbone for interoperability in
the future. The Executive Office of Public Safety provided NEMLEC with the
vision to share data at the grassroots of public safety."
"We are pleased to be a part of the NEMLEC expansion, which depicts the
commitment that we have expressed in regional systems and the belief that
homeland security starts with the officer and first responder on the street,"
said Don Nagle, General Manager for BIO-key's Public Safety Division.
Several NEMLEC members -- police departments in Massachusetts including
Arlington, Bedford, Concord and Lincoln -- have contracted to move their
mobile data infrastructure to NEMLEC's larger, regional mobile data network.
