Bluefire Security Adds VPN to Wireless Security Suite

BALTIMORE, July 19 -- Bluefire Security Technologies announced today that it is adding virtual private networking to its Bluefire Mobile Firewall Plus solution. The VPN offering represents an integral step toward achieving the company's vision of delivering a comprehensive mobile security solution that solves today's handheld security problems and addresses tomorrow's wireless threats with centrally managed, multi-layered software.

"In reaching out to our customers and partners, we saw a clear desire to take better advantage of the promise of wireless," said Mark Komisky, CEO of Bluefire. "However, many organizations cited security as the primary factor in delaying their wireless handheld deployments. By enhancing our Mobile Firewall Plus offering with VPN, we're helping them achieve that goal by protecting wireless data in transit and on the device. We're also capitalizing on the opportunity to deliver what others in the mobile security space cannot -- the world's first fully integrated VPN and firewall solution designed expressly for handheld devices."

Bluefire's VPN feature will help ensure that mobile enterprises maintain the privacy and integrity of in-transit data by creating a secure tunnel between sender and receiver. Just as in traditional network security, users will be able to leverage the complementary nature of VPN and firewall technologies to secure and filter information entering and exiting their wireless network via handheld devices.

Adopting Bluefire's multi-layered wireless security strategy, mobile enterprises can:
  • Protect Lost and Stolen Devices - Administrators can design and enforce policies that lock down the device and even remotely wipe the data off the device, ensuring that it does not get into the wrong hands.

  • Prevent Attacks and Unauthorized Access - Enterprises can prevent hackers from exploiting unsecured handheld devices as a backdoor to the enterprise network.

  • Welcome Employee-Owned Handhelds - IT managers can now set policies for and monitor activity on employee-owned devices accessing the enterprise network.

Bluefire's VPN feature will be available to customers in the third quarter of 2004. It is being integrated into the company's existing central management console to ensure ease of use and reporting. The VPN technology will be compliant with the Microsoft Pocket PC 2002 and Windows Mobile 2003 platforms.
