Ekahau Launches Location-Aware Apps for Wi-Fi-Enabled Computers
Saratoga Ca. June 8th 2004 -- Ekahau Inc. today announced that enterprise customers in various markets can now run location-aware applications on their Wi-Fi enabled mobile computers, including those based on Intel(r) Centrino(tm) mobile technology. Enterprise location-aware computing applications typically deliver content or services to end users based on location and context, such as a doctor being automatically presented with a patient's records based on the proximity of the patient to the doctor.
The patented Ekahau Positioning Engine(tm) (EPE) is a software-based positioning solution that can continuously pinpoint and track the location of mobile computing devices with an accuracy of 1-2 meters in indoor and campus environments. EPE leverages industry standard Wi-Fi networks, which are prevalent in today's enterprises, to track the location of mobile computers and other Wi-Fi enabled devices. Unlike competing solutions, Ekahau technology does not require any additional wireless infrastructure on top of the standard Wi-Fi network. EPE is in use today and being piloted in a wide variety of industries from Universities to Hospitals and Manufacturing Plants to Enterprise Campuses. EPE powers a wide variety of applications including content delivery based on location, and interactive campus or city navigation guides. The recently launched Ekahau Wi-Fi Tag allows enterprises to track virtually any type of object over a standard Wi-Fi network.
Ekahau worked with Intel to optimize its solution for mobile PCs based on Intel Centrino mobile technology - Intel's leading technology for mobile computing. Intel Centrino mobile technology delivers outstanding mobile performance and wireless LAN capability, while enabling extended battery life in thinner and lighter notebook PCs.
"We are very excited about the possibilities created by working with Intel on this initiative and optimizing our solution to work with Intel Centrino mobile technology," said Antti Korhonen, CEO of Ekahau. "Our customers alike are excited at the prospect of being able take advantage of this combined technology solution and being able to leverage their existing Wi-Fi network investment. Finding people and "things" in the enterprise based on real-time location is an easy extension to an existing Wi-Fi network that drives measurable ROI in virtually any industry".
"Location-aware computing over Wi-Fi networks is another exciting example of how mobile computing has the potential to change how people work and communicate," said Karen Regis, director of marketing programs for Intel's Mobile Platforms Group. "The combination of software-based positioning solutions such as the Ekahau Positioning Engine and Intel Centrino mobile technology has the potential to increase flexibility and productivity for mobile PC users in the enterprise."
