Proxim and Nomadix Partner with ACISgroup to Deliver Wi-Fi Hot Spots to Athens Hotels
Sunnyvale and Westlake Village, Calif.
Proxim Corporation (Nasdaq: PROX), a global leader in wireless networking equipment for Wi-Fi and broadband wireless networks and Nomadix, the leading supplier of Public-access solutions, today announced that ACISgroup, a leading provider of Internet services and the first wireless ISP in Greece, has selected Proxim and Nomadix public hot spot solutions for deployment at major Athens hotels and surrounding outdoor areas. The hot spots will give tourists attending this summer’s Games convenient, high-speed wireless Internet access. The company also plans to offer Voice over IP services at its hot spots in the future. ACISgroup’s plans also include deploying Proxim’s last mile broadband wireless access solutions to residential and industrial areas in Greece.
ACISgroup is deploying the Proxim ORiNOCO AP-2500 access points for public hot spots at smaller hotels. For larger hotels, the company is deploying a combination of the new ORiNOCO AP-4000 access points and AP-600 access points with the Nomadix Universal Subscriber Gateway II™ (USG II) and the HotSpot Gateway™ (HSG) to enhance the security of the wireless connection and enable users to roam into the hotspot seamlessly. E*comm is providing wireless systems integration for the network.
The service provider is also using Proxim’s Tsunami MP.11a high bandwidth point-to-multipoint radios that offer 54 Mbps data rates with up to 30 Megabits per second effective bandwidth for wireless backhaul of hot spot traffic as well as for last mile access. The Tsunami MP.11a is the first high-performance multipoint solution operating in the 5.47-5.725 GHz license-exempt band available for use in Europe.

According to research firm IDC, demand for hot spots is expected to grow dramatically, particularly in Europe. They predict nearly 8 million hot spot users and 18,000 hot spots in Western Europe by 2007, with the majority of those users logging in to networks in airports, hotels, train stations and restaurants.
