TeleSym Debuts the First Mobile VoIP System Based On Intel-R- NetStructure-TM- Host Media Processing
CHICAGO--June 21, 2004--TeleSym, Inc. will tomorrow unveil its SymPhone Enterprise VoIP System, the third generation of its software for making voice calls from mobile computers. With new provisions for security, standards support, and interoperability, SymPhone complements the VoIP infrastructure from the full range of manufacturers and telecommunications suppliers.
SymPhone is the first mobile VoIP system based on Intel NetStructure Host Media Processing (HMP) software on carrier or enterprise servers. The combination is being demonstrated June 22-24 in the Intel booth (#12335) at Supercomm, at McCormick Place in Chicago.
"Internet telephony is becoming a widespread carrier and corporate priority. As important as the savings on phone service can be, the return on investment for VoIP is limited by the lack of mobility in today's solutions," explains Bob Hart, chief executive officer, TeleSym.
"Workers move around their buildings, the corporate campus and the community, and they travel the world," Hart continued. "With SymPhone, we extend VoIP savings to all of those places. The mobility significantly enhances productivity and ROI."
Interoperable among vendors, industry standards
To bridge the many proprietary approaches to VoIP equipment and software, TeleSym has embraced the top industry standards, including SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) and H.323, which are supported using HMP software. When used with modular platforms such as carrier-grade servers based on Intel(R) processors, the HMP software approach provides reliability and lower total cost of ownership.
"SymPhone connects to virtually any PBX or PSTN system or source. HMP software enables it to work with heterogeneous network environments, popular handheld devices and Windows-based PCs," said Tony Neal-Graves, general manager, Network Building Block Division, Intel. "As the demand rises for IP mobility services, it is essential for service providers to deploy a modular, cost-effective and scalable back-end infrastructure."
At the client (user) level, SymPhone utilizes additional Intel building blocks. SymPhone for Windows notebook, tablet and desktop personal computers was the first (March 2003) wireless Internet telephony software tailored and validated for Intel Centrino(TM) mobile technology computers. At the same time, SymPhone for the Pocket PC is optimized for PDAs and other mobile computers based on Intel XScale(R) Technology.
SymPhone addresses security and call quality
SymPhone is the first mobile VoIP system to solve major security and quality challenges.
The latest generation of SymPhone provides the robust security features sought by enterprises. To accomplish that, TeleSym has embedded RSA Security's leading RSA Keon(R) digital certificate management solution, which provides user authentication and encryption, to ensure call privacy. In addition, SymPhone operates with other security and network border control elements commonly used by enterprises, including traversing firewalls and NATs.
SymPhone client software for the PC and Pocket PC are proven, award-winning category leaders for call quality and resiliency, especially in tough wireless network environments, typically 802.11 or Wi-Fi.
TeleSym's innovative approach to call quality is called Quality at the Edge(TM), and it solves issues that cannot be addressed by network-based quality-of-service (QoS) adjustments. By placing quality management in the client software, SymPhone:
-- Maintains calls when the packet loss is as high as 50 percent
-- Handles up to 400ms of jitter
-- Manages up to 250msec of latency
-- Manages across multiple networks and wireless access points, of mixed types
-- Automatically reconnects calls that are temporarily interrupted.
The latest SymPhone System also applies least-cost routing that delivers savings on long-distance toll charges and administration costs, by routing calls as far as possible over IP before connecting to the public telephone system. This is a cost-saving advantage that is particularly important for international enterprises.
Trial opportunities
A free download trial (time limited) of the SymPhone Client software is available at www.telesym.com.
