TCS Provides NTELOS With Precise Life-Saving E9-1-1 Services for Its Customers
ANNAPOLIS, Md.--March 10, 2004--TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. (TCS) (NASDAQ:TSYS) a global leader in wireless data technology, today announced that TCS' precise location-determining services are now powering E9-1-1 services provided by NTELOS Wireless. When NTELOS customers with Phase II capable handsets dial 9-1-1 in the markets where NTELOS has deployed the TCS Phase II E9-1-1 solution, emergency operators will quickly be able to accurately and automatically pinpoint the position of the caller - saving valuable seconds in emergency situations.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has mandated that wireless carriers provide precise (also known as Phase II) caller location information. NTELOS is deploying the TCS E9-1-1 service that includes a Hosted Position Determination Entity (HPDE), which meets or exceeds the FCC requirements.
NTELOS is the eighth wireless carrier to contract for TCS' hosted service, which provides carriers with an alternative to purchasing their own Position Determining Entity (PDE) and Mobile Positioning Center (MPC) systems to meet the FCC's E9-1-1 mandate. TCS has deployed this lifesaving service for millions of subscribers in 28 wireless carrier networks. TCS has also integrated its E9-1-1 location technology for over 3,900 Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) connections throughout the United States, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, with every major U.S. Local Exchange Carrier (LEC), and for 135 Automatic Location Information (ALI) databases.
"By relying on proven TCS technology, we can provide our customers emergency services with the precise location information that is most critical in a crisis situation," said Carl Rosberg, President of NTELOS Wireless. "In addition, since TCS provides a hosted solution, we were able to deploy its technology quickly, easily and affordably."
"We are very pleased to continue our successful relationship with NTELOS Wireless," said Maurice B. Tose, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer for TCS. "Effective emergency services continue to be a top priority for cell phone subscribers. It is gratifying to extend our Phase I support and now provide NTELOS Wireless with Phase II E9-1-1 service which ensures its customers' safety, while meeting its obligations to its subscribers and the FCC."
