Siemens presents the first tri-band combi module for tracking applications
CeBIT, Hanover, 17 March 2004 -- With the XT55, the mobile arm of Siemens AG (Siemens mobile for short) has developed the first tri-band module whose pc board integrates GSM/GPRS components and a GPS receiver. The new module is especially suitable for performing tracking functions in applications such as fleet management, vehicle positioning, navigation, and emergency and location-based services. Its preconfigured functions and compact design make the module easy to incorporate in new applications. These will then be ready for the market sooner.
One example of the advantages of a module specially designed for tracking is that it can help transport valuable freight more safely by sending data that keeps the owner constantly informed about its location. Alongside tri-band GSM/GPRS technology, the XT55 also uses satellite navigation (GPS: Global Positioning System). So the current satellite position can be determined faster, the module has highly efficient hardware, optimized positioning software, and an expanded memory. Determining a satellite’s position quickly allows the connection to be set up faster and so speeds up the transmission of data to the application.
For faster satellite positioning the XT55 module uses twelve parallel channels; the position is determined more precisely by means of temperature-stabilizing crystal oscillators (TCXO technology: Temperature Compensated Crystal Oscillators). The integrated software for the TCP/IP communication protocol (TCP/IP stack) converts data streams into data packets and makes GPRS traffic possible. The XT55 transmits and receives on the 900, 1800, and 1900 MHz frequencies and sends data packets at a GPRS Class 10 rate. The module measures 53 mm x 34 mm x 5.1 mm; the TricklePower energy-saving mode helps minimize power consumption.
A 2003 Gartner Group study predicts vigorous growth in the tracking systems market over the coming years: compared to sales last year totaling just over half a million systems, the year 2007 is likely to see the 2.5 million mark exceeded. Freight-tracking systems will account for the biggest share, followed by systems for tracking people and animals.

Visitors to the CeBIT in Hanover can experience first hand how the XT55 tracks taxis in the Thuringian Forest.
The first functioning models are already available. The XT55 will go into serial production in the first quarter of 2004.
