Danger and Sony Music Deploy HiFi Ringers for hiptop® Wireless Solution
PALO ALTO, Calif. (May 12, 2004) — Danger, Inc. and Sony Music Entertainment today announced the premiere of the first collection of HiFi Ringers for the hiptop® Wireless Solution, making high quality mobile music based on original song recordings available to hiptop users for the first time. The initial offering, developed by the Sony Music Mobile Group, includes a variety of recent hits and classic tracks, and will be updated and expanded regularly.
The hiptop device is designed to make sound come alive, and leverages the HiFi Ringers to produce a great listening experience. The hiptop features rich sound and a high-volume speaker, and provides a great musical experience by reproducing a HiFi Ringer that plays seamlessly and continuously without interruption. When someone calls, the ringer triggers a handset light show and matching vibration that are synched with the music, so that receiving a phone call truly becomes an event.
The hiptop is a wireless all-in-one device that combines a fully featured mobile phone with a variety of high-speed data communication applications, including an HTML Web browser, an embedded email account, instant messaging, a personal organizer, games and other features—all viewable on a crisp 65,000 color display with a full QWERTY keyboard for data entry. Because of the unique “catalog” application on the device, users are able to preview and then download content such as ringtones wirelessly to their devices. Best of all, the easy-to-use vending machine makes browsing through available ringtones easy and fun.
“We’re excited to be the first to launch this new generation of ringtones, created from the original song recording, on Danger’s hiptop solution,” said Thomas Gewecke, Senior Vice President, Business Development, Sony Music Digital Services. “From classics like AC/DC’s Back in Black to current hits such as Game Over from Li’l Flip, Sony Music’s content provides hiptop customers with a satisfying musical experience they can enjoy again and again.”
One of the first carriers to make the Sony Music content available is T-Mobile, which sells the hiptop nationwide as the T-Mobile Sidekick. Recognizing the popularity of Sony’s offering for its customers, T-Mobile expanded its own strategic partnership with Sony to include content for the Sidekick. “Our customers are very excited to have such compelling music content on the Sidekick,” said Michael Gallelli, Director of Content Marketing & Acquisition of T-Mobile. “The demand for Sony Music HiFi Ringers on the T-Mobile Sidekick has far exceeded our expectations.”
“Danger is pleased to be working with a music industry giant such as Sony Music,” said Hank Nothhaft, chairman and chief executive officer, Danger, Inc. “Quality downloadable content like Sony’s HiFi Ringers provides our carrier partners with new revenue streams and their customers with a suite of services not available on any other device in the market today.”
