New LightSurf 6 Open Standards MMS Platform Enhances Visual Communications for Wireless Operators

SANTA CRUZ, CA – May 18, 2004 – LightSurf Technologies, Inc., the global leader in open standards multimedia messaging and interoperability solutions, announced today the immediate availability of the LightSurf 6 Open Standards MMS Platform, the industry’s most advanced end-to-end multimedia messaging platform, designed to streamline the camera phone experience from start to finish. LightSurf 6 brings improved performance to picture messaging, video messaging, and other interactive mobile services with enhanced viewing, sharing, and printing from camera phones, full MMS interoperability across both CDMA and GSM networks, and a variety of new advances that provide a simplified and more compelling experience for consumers.

LightSurf 6 was designed in response to feedback from partners, customers, and industry experts to further improve upon the world’s leading end-to-end multimedia messaging platform. Research shows that the number one consumer request is for better pictures. LightSurf 6 delivers with the new Power Media Processor service (PMP), a real-time service that automatically corrects and improves camera phone output.

Another top request from wireless operators is for seamless messaging interoperability between wireless operator networks. LightSurf 6 makes cross-network interoperability possible with the new Global Exchange for MMS (GX-MMS), a highly-scalable clearinghouse model that routes multimedia message traffic - including text, pictures, audio and video - from one wireless operator to another, enabling effortless sharing across any CDMA or GSM network.

With the newest release of the LightSurf platform, LightSurf now has full support for both MMS and non-MMS multimedia services for all types of mobile data networks. In addition to full support for 3GPP, 3GPP2, and OMA standards, LightSurf 6 brings improved performance to core services like messaging infrastructure, storage, and transcoding, while introducing new applications that further enhance the MMS experience. LightSurf 6 also adds full support for MMS PictureMail and VideoMail, and is the foundation for LightSurf’s outsourced MMSC solution.

“Based on the rapid growth of camera phones, we know that consumer needs and behaviors change incredibly fast,” said Philippe Kahn, CEO of LightSurf Technologies, Inc. “By keeping our finger on the pulse of what consumers and operators want and need, we have stayed ahead of the curve, incorporating new features and advancing our current technology, which keeps operators happy and, ultimately, their customers staying put.”

New Services Available with LightSurf 6 Open Standards MMS Platform:

  • Global Exchange for MMS (GX-MMS)

LightSurf GX-MMS provides true cross-carrier and cross-technology MMS interoperability for wireless operators. This highly scalable clearinghouse model routes multimedia message traffic - including text, pictures, audio and video - from one wireless operator to another, enabling effortless and seamless cross-carrier sharing. GX-MMS also supports the inter-connection of messaging services between CDMA and GSM networks.

  • Power Media Processor (PMP)

LightSurf PMP optimizes camera phone pictures and videos for improved viewing, sharing, and printing. PMP enhances camera phone output in real time for optimal delivery to all mobile phones, PCs, online albums, and print fulfillment centers. The PMP service automatically corrects blurriness, distortion, faded color, and other artifacts of tiny image capturing devices.
