Washington State Department of Fish And Wildlife Provides Wireless Data Solution to 135 Officers
SEATTLE, Nov. 17 -- More than 135 field officers for the
Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) now use in-car
computers and wireless data services enabled by Mobility XE from NetMotion
Wireless. This new wireless system has become an essential law enforcement
tool for the officers who patrol more than 66,000 square miles of public and
private land; 4,721 square miles of public and private waterways; and 800,000
acres of forest. Most officers work almost exclusively in the field and rely
on the new wireless data solution to obtain criminal records from state and
federal databases, check for outstanding warrants, and file reports with
supervisors and court officers. The Department of Fish and Wildlife estimates
this wireless data solution saves an average of two hours per day for each
officer.
"We conducted an exhaustive search for a mobility management solution that
would enable our enforcement officers to securely and reliably use wide area
wireless data networks for access to the information they need to be
effective," said Captain John Broome, WDFW Enforcement Program. "Only
NetMotion Mobility provided us with the solution that we were looking for. It
improved our response times and overall communications efficiency."
The department uses Mobility XE from NetMotion Wireless, the leading
provider of mobility management solutions, in conjunction with wide area
wireless data services from AT&T Wireless (now Cingular Wireless) and Verizon
Wireless. Mobility XE provides seamless roaming among multiple wireless
networks and government-grade security through its Roamable VPN. In addition,
Mobility XE increases performance of wide area wireless networks by 100
percent through compression and link optimizations.
The job of enforcement officers is to protect wildlife resources of the
state, check on people engaged in hunting and fishing activities, and monitor
construction projects that could affect wildlife and fish habitats.
Using a U.S. Department of Justice COPSMore Grant, the WDFW was able to
purchase all the computers, infrastructure, software, wireless network
interface cards and servers to create their wireless infrastructure.
Mobile wireless access is now an essential and inseparable part of
enforcement officers' daily lives. Real-time access to criminal records
increases officer safety. In addition, officers use the system to check
status of hunting and fishing licenses, and to communicate with other WDFW
officers. The system has saved many hours of time the officers once spent
driving to an office to complete reports.
