The Tolly Group Awards Azimuth “First & Foremost” Certification for Voice Over WLAN Test Solution

ACTON, MA- Nov 29, 2004 - Azimuth Systems, Inc., innovators in scalable, automated wireless network test systems, today announced that its new benchmark test suite designed for testing VoIP in the Wi-Fi environment has earned The Tolly Group’s prestigious “First & Foremost” certification as the first Wi-Fi test solution to test VoWLAN performance of a Wi-Fi infrastructure and VoWLAN handsets. Launched in April 2004, The Tolly Group’s First & Foremost certification program provides end-users with demonstrated proof of vendors' leadership claims, and is awarded to one product certified by The Tolly Group for a particular achievement.

“While the hype around VoWLAN and Wi-Fi to cellular roaming is increasing, there has been no definition of the needs of wireless handsets and the network infrastructure requirements to meet the stringent constant throughput, low delay and jitter standards for VoIP,” said Kevin Tolly, President/CEO of The Tolly Group. “Azimuth has released the first benchmark tests of this kind that we’ve seen to validate the functionality of VoIP in a wireless LAN environment, allowing vendors and service providers to test the performance of the network infrastructure before deploying in the field.”

“Factors such as roaming between access points, presence of other wireless clients and data traffic, and interoperability between handsets and access points will have a dramatic effect on the success of VoWLAN technology,” said Ray Cronin, CEO of Azimuth Systems. “The Azimuth W-Series test platform fulfills the critical needs of VoWLAN testing, and we are extremely pleased that a prominent, independent third-party like The Tolly Group has validated our product claims through the First & Foremost certification program.”

The Azimuth suite of performance validation tests focuses on system level test of VoWLAN, allowing vendors, service providers and enterprise IT managers to independently validate the components of the VoWLAN solution and verify their functionality, interoperability and performance. The benchmark suite initially consists of four components:

1) Range vs. Voice Quality – a test which automatically discerns range vs. voice quality (as defined by Mean Opinion Score);

2) Handset Roaming – a test which measures the amount of time a handset takes to roam between access points;

3) Roaming vs. Voice Quality – a test which automatically discerns range vs. voice quality (as defined by Mean Opinion Score);

4) Infrastructure Performance – a test that implements combinations of high priority voice streams and best effort data traffic to validate the APs ability to deliver prioritized voice and also measures latency and jitter through the access point.

The Azimuth W-Series is the industry’s first standardized test platform for system level testing of IEEE 802.11 wireless access points, clients and other devices. Designed from the ground up as an off-the-shelf, wireless LAN test platform, W-Series systems provide the ability to configure an entire WLAN network in a bench top chassis designed for complete Radio Frequency (RF) isolation and control. The flexibility and programmability of the W-Series allows for the thorough evaluation of wireless LAN equipment under varying mobility conditions and traffic patterns, as well as precise analysis of the results. The system offers an ideal environment to perform software design validation and to test advanced wireless functionality including the latest IEEE standards.
