WirelessDevNet.com Press Release

Java Brand Rocks Youth Market with mtvU Sponsorship

SANTA CLARA, Calif., October 5, 2004 - Sun Microsystems (Nasdaq:SUNW), the creator and leading advocate of Java (TM) technology, today announced a marketing sponsorship with mtvU to bring fun, music and excitement to college students nationwide with Java Powered (TM) products. Sun will join the 2004 mtvU Road Trip Tour and campus VJ search to connect college students to Java Powered products and the ultimate Java marketplace, java.com.

Kicking off its college outreach program, Sun will join the 2004 mtvU Road Trip Tour, a 10 campus tour that includes both online and broadcast advertising placements to reach college students across the country and showcase Java technology in action. Targeting college students builds demand for Java Powered products and services for both Sun and its partners, particularly for mobile and desktop Java Powered applications such as Java games, office tools and productivity applications.

java.com is the ultimate consumer Java marketplace reaching over 10 million visitors a month who can learn about Java, download the latest, free Java technology for their personal computers and also download any number of the thousands of Java Powered applications and services. At java.com, visitors can check out the latest songs by their favorite artists such as Green Day, Snoop Dogg and Boyz II Men and download them onto their Java Powered mobile phones as personalized ring tones or even remix their own ring tones from a Java Powered application on their PCs. java.com is also a great resource for the latest Java Powered desktop productivity tools to help students with their schoolwork. For example, the ScheduleWorld application allows students to access their schedule from any web browser and sychronize it on their mobile phones.

"Today's youth are interacting with Java Powered products everyday," said Ingrid Van Den Hoogen, VP of Brand Experience and Community Marketing, Sun Microsystems. "mtvU reaches over six million college students across the United States, working with them allows us to excite and educate a new generation about the many different ways that Java technology is impacting their lives- today and into the future. With mobile phones becoming the main tool for student communication, Java Powered applications will help them discover a whole new world of self-expression and entertainment. These exciting applications include customized mobile personas, electronic directions and multi-player games."

One component of Sun's activities during the mtvU Road Trip Tour and campus VJ search is an on-campus activity called "Impromptu U" that allows college students to record an impromptu pre-VJ audition, then send the digital video clip to friends and family via e-mail from java.com. The Java Powered brand will also be featured in online banner ads for mtvu.com and television commercials that will air on the mtvU campus network during tour-related programming in November.

"The 2004 mtvU Road Trip Tour is a great way for us to hit the road, discover some amazing student talent and bring a great campus event to our partner universities," said Carolyn Everson, Director, mtvU Advertising Sales. "We are pleased to have Sun Microsystems on board to bring their Java technology to the tour, and provide students with a fun and rewarding video they can take away from their mtvU experience."

Introduced nearly ten years ago, Sun's Java technology enjoyed instant success in the market and has since proliferated to a wide variety of consumer products. Sun's Java technology now powers over 1.75 billion devices across the globe, including 350 million Java Powered phones, 600 million Java smart cards, set top boxes, PDAs, printers, games and Web sites. In addition, Java technology comes pre-installed on most personal computers and can even be found in automotive navigation and entertainment systems, airplanes and even on the Mars Rover.
