Symbol and Nextel Form Partnership to Develop and Co-Market Enterprise Mobility Solutions

HOLTSVILLE, N.Y. & RESTON, Va.--Oct. 5, 2004--Symbol Technologies, Inc., The Enterprise Mobility Company(TM) (NYSE:SBL), and Nextel Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ:NXTL) today announced an agreement to develop mobile computing solutions, including embedding Nextel's iDEN(TM) (integrated Digital Enhanced Network) technology into future handheld devices.

Symbol and Nextel plan to jointly develop and co-market voice and data mobile solutions to help business customers reduce operating costs, increase workforce productivity, and drive operational efficiencies. The Symbol-Nextel mobile solutions for vertical field service and sales workers will be targeted across many industry segments, including transportation and distribution, public safety, retail, manufacturing, healthcare, utilities and telecommunications.

As a result of this alliance, customers utilizing Symbol iDEN embedded handheld solutions will have access to Nextel's nationwide wireless network and Symbol's enterprise mobility reference architecture. By working with Nextel, Symbol will be able to incorporate Nextel's 4-in-1 wireless offerings, including digital cellular voice, Nationwide Direct Connect(SM) service, Nextel Online® wireless data and two-way messaging.

Symbol and Nextel plan to deliver products directly to business customers and through each other's vast channel partner and reseller networks. As part of the strategic alliance, Nextel broadens its ability to provide more wireless services and extends its position in end-to-end mobility solutions, while Symbol gains the ability to offer its mobile solutions with advanced voice and data services to Nextel's business customers. The alliance will help accelerate the time-to-market for Symbol's next generation voice and data handheld devices.

"This joint effort will help our customers take advantage of potential productivity gains enabled by integrated wireless mobile computers with advanced data capture," said Chuck Dourlet, Symbol Technologies' vice president of mobile computing product marketing. "Symbol plans to expand its portfolio of wide-area wireless-enabled mobile computing devices so that our customers can leverage Nextel's nationwide network and service offerings."

"We are pleased to partner with a leader in enterprise mobility solutions to deliver Nextel's all-digital voice and data services to the enterprise market place," said Ernie Cormier, Nextel Communications' vice president of product management. "Working with Symbol, we can jointly help customers in our key market segments attain operational efficiencies and return-on-investment from their mobile business applications."

More information related to product sales and availability will be disclosed in 2005.
