Siemens Awarded Mobile Network Extension For Maxis in Malaysia

Third 3G/UMTS order in Asia: Siemens awarded mobile network extension for Maxis in Malaysia Malaysia’s leading mobile operator, Maxis Communications Bhd. (Maxis), has selected Siemens as one of its second (2G/GSM) and third generation (3G/UMTS) infrastructure suppliers. Under the terms of the three-year framework contract, the Siemens Communications Group will deliver and install infrastructure for the Maxis 2G switching network in Malaysia as well as upgrade the existing switching infrastructure to a 3G/UMTS mobile network based on W-CDMA transmission technology. This is the third 3G/UMTS order for Siemens in Asia.

The contract also includes the option of deploying 3G/UMTS radio network equipment and professional services, including network design and system integration. This will ensure that Maxis can quickly move to meet future customer growth in mobile data services.

“We are happy with the cooperation from Siemens to create this win-win situation. While Siemens is known for its leading technology offerings, we are also pleased with the terms of the contract that was flexible, creative and competitive. With our long standing partnership with Siemens, we are able to continuously offer o ur customers a wealth of new mobile services," said Dato’ Jamaludin Ibrahim, Chief Executive Officer, Maxis. Siemens has been working with Maxis since 1995 as a supplier of 2G/GSM mobile technology. Maxis is Malaysia’s largest mobile provider with a current customer base of 5.12 million (as of June 2004) with over 40 per cent market share.

“The order from Maxis reinforces our position as the leading global equipment provider for third generation mobile technology“, said Christoph Caselitz, President of Mobile Networks at Siemens Communications. “We are particularly pleased with this third 3G success on the extreme important Asian market.“

With this 3G/W-CDMA contract, Siemens will be able to strengthen its position as the world’s leading supplier in the 3G sector. One out of every two 3G/W-CDMA networks in commercial service throughout the world today comes from Siemens and its technology partner NEC, which means that the two companies cover 90 percent of all 3G subscribers worldwide.
