Freescale Semiconductor drives portable digital entertainment

AUSTIN, TX – October 20, 2004 – Cinema-quality video and the latest in digital entertainment content can be accessible anytime, anywhere with the arrival of Windows Mobile™-based Portable Media Centers this fall. Portable Media Centers are handheld devices allowing you to download stored media from your PC giving you recorded TV, movies, home videos, music and photos “on the go.”

To help speed the development of these portable media devices, Freescale Semiconductor (NYSE:FSL) has introduced its i.MX21 Portable Media Player (PMP) Reference Design. Based on the commercially available i.MX21 applications processor, the i.MX21 PMP reference design eliminates months of development time in creating multimedia handhelds. The PMP reference design supports the Microsoft Windows® CE 5.0 OS – providing rich video and hi-fidelity audio in a cost-effective design package.

"The demand is growing for devices based on the Microsoft Portable Media Center platform. Freescale's i.MX21 Portable Media Player Reference Design Kit will help developers quickly capture that demand," said David Proctor, program manager, Microsoft Portable Media Centers. "Based on the robust i.MX21 multimedia applications processor and the Windows CE 5.0 OS, the i.MX21 Portable Media Player Reference Design Kit offers developers the ability to significantly reduce their design time, integrate broad connectivity capability and drive high-quality multimedia applications in their portable media device."

Freescale’s i.MX21 PMP kit is a comprehensive hardware and software development kit available through www.freescale.com/imx21. The kit contains schematic (OrCAD or PDF), layout files, a bill of material, the i.MX21 Windows CE 5.0/Portable Media Center board support package and performance data.

PMP based on the i.MX21 Applications Processor
The i.MX21 multimedia processor is the latest addition to the Freescale i.MX family. The i.MX21 is a robust platform for delivering exceptional multimedia performance and long battery life. It includes an on-chip Enhanced Multimedia Accelerator (eMMA) offering independent pre- and post-processing modules as well as simultaneous MPEG-4 and H.263 encode and decode acceleration. This significantly reduces the memory, CPU cycles and power requirements to drive video.

The commercially available i.MX21 applications processor has a suggested price of $16.80 (USD) in 10,000 piece quantities. For more information, call your Freescale sales representative or distributor or visit www.freescale.com/imx21.
