ZTE in World First 2MB CDMA SMS Breakthrough
ZTE Corporation of China, a leading global supplier of advanced telecommunications infrastructure, has worked with China Unicom to successfully develop the world’s first 2 Megabyte (2MB) CDMA Short Message Service Centre (SMSC).
In a joint effort with Jiangsu Unicom, a provincial branch of China Unicom, ZTE has developed a 2MB signaling link to considerably increase the traffic flow carried by a single signaling link, thus ensuring the exploitation of Jiangsu Unicom’s CDMA Short Message Service, and reducing greatly its networking complexity and running cost. To operate the new link, ZTE has developed special functional software to achieve a smooth upgrade and allow mixed-use of 64KB and 2MB signaling links in a single SMSC. ZTE’s CDMA Short Message System also provides a multi-GT function to effectively solve the problem of uneven signaling load for the multi-module networking of 2MB SS7 signaling processing system and guarantee the system’s reliable operation.
“SMS messaging is enjoying explosive growth worldwide,” said Mr LuPing ZTE’s GM of WDSS products.
“It is generating important revenues for our customers and helping people communicate to a level that was unimaginable a few years ago. It was only a matter of time before the networks began to feel the strain and I’m delighted that ZTE has taken the initiative – with our customer – to come up with a solution before any problems began to arise”.
The news has been welcomed by others in the mobile market: “The wireless industry requires capacity innovations such as this by ZTE in order to address the exponential growth of messaging uptake,” said Mike Donnell, president and CEO of Zi Corporation, a text input technology supplier to ZTE mobile handsets. 550 billion short messages are expected to be sent this year alone in China and this number is projected to almost triple to 1.4 trillion short messages sent by 2006.
ZTE is one of the world’s leading suppliers of CDMA systems. It already has a 90% market share in China across 27 provinces and sees great potential for the new 2MB link across China and internationally.
ZTE began research into the 2MB high-speed signaling link in 2001, and had put it into a wide range of applications in GSM networks for China Mobile and China Unicom by 2003. At the beginning of 2003, considering the potential demand for the 2MB signaling link to be used in CDMA SMSC, ZTE started to cooperate with Jiangsu Unicom and Beijing Unicom in carrying out a series of related tests and trials.
This is the latest success in this field for ZTE, which recently launched CDMA SMS-based value-added service products – such as message group sending and prepaid data service – and put them into successful commercial use in the headquarters of China Unicom and its provincial branches. ZTE is now working with carriers around the globe to boost the further development of CDMA mobile communications with its wide range of products, continuous technical innovation and fast market response.
