WirelessDevNet.com Press Release
Telcontar Sponsors NAVTEQ Global LBS Challenge
CTIA WIRELESS I.T. & Entertainment, San Francisco, Booth 825 - October 25, 2004 - Telcontar, a leading supplier of software and related services for Location-Based Services (LBS), today announced its participation in the upcoming NAVTEQ Global LBS Challenge as a Gold sponsor as well as a Silver sponsor for the Navigation/POI Lookup/Traffic category of the contest. Back for a second year, the Global LBS Challenge gives application developers from around the world an opportunity to submit their LBS solutions, powered by NAVTEQT maps, to be judged by leading industry experts. As a Gold Sponsor, Telcontar is offering its Drill Down Server® (DDS) and Rich Map Engine® (RME) spatial software platforms free of charge to developers that meet the LBS Challenge qualifications. Winners using Telcontar tools will receive special pricing for production licenses when they are ready to enter production.
Last year, NAVTEQ launched the Wireless LBS Challenge, a contest meant to challenge application developers to build LBS solutions that work on cell phones or wireless handheld devices. The Wireless LBS Challenge was met with an overwhelmingly positive response from the industry. Registration for the current contest is open and will close at midnight Central Time on November 22, 2004. All contest solution entries must be submitted on or before midnight on January 31, 2004 and received by midnight on February 4, 2005.
In recognition of the rapidly expanding utility of location-based information, separate solution categories will be identified and judged independently. The six solution categories include Personal Security, Peer to Peer/Find Me, Navigation/POI LookUp/Traffic, Commerce/Advertising/Buying/Billing, Asset Tracking/Field Services and Gaming/Location Based Imaging. Final winners will be selected based on the solutions' usability and utility.
The grand-prize winner will receive $50,000 in cash and $100,000 worth of NAVTEQ Map licenses for up to one year. Each category winner, other than the Grand Prize Winner, will receive $10,000 in cash and $75,000 worth of NAVTEQ Map licenses for up to one year. The contest kick-off will take place on Monday, October 25, 2004 at the fall CTIA IT and Entertainment 2004 in San Francisco, CA. Application developers are encouraged to register now for the Global LBS Challenge
Stated J. Kim Fennell, President and CEO of Telcontar, "Four of the eight finalists from the first LBS Challenge built their LBS applications with Telcontar tools, including the winner. This demonstrates that our software is the platform of choice by developers for a variety of successful wireless LBS applications and should be made available to all that want to participate in the contest. It is clear that our partner NAVTEQ has created a wildly successful method to motivate developers and foster new wireless applications. Telcontar wishes to encourage this development by supporting the Global LBS Challenge as a sponsor. We are honored to be working with NAVTEQ and so many promising developers for this contest."
"Telcontar's spatial software platforms took prominent positions in last year's contest, serving as the foundation for several of the contestants' applications. The company's sponsorship of the Global LBS Challenge not only benefits developers but also confirms the integral relationship between NAVTEQ and Telcontar as advocates for advanced LBS technology and leadership," commented Winston Guillory, Senior Vice President - North American Sales for NAVTEQ.
