Designing Mobile Services For 3G

The telecommunication sector is facing a serious problem as the development of mobile services, e.g. wireless telephone directories, call-barrier or location-based community applications, is often time-consuming and inhibited by an unnecessarily difficult access to the technical facilities of mobile networks. In order to help overcoming this obstacle Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS and German software vendor Derdack GmbH have now started joint research for next generation software platforms for wireless service providers and mobile operators.

With their Open 3G beyond test bed, Fraunhofer FOKUS is already providing since 2002 insights into the next generation of wireless networking and mobile service delivery platform technologies aiming to ease access to increasing number of different mobile operator facilities, including telephony and data services, such as Short Message, Multimedia Message and Instant Messaging Services, as well as location and presence information. FOKUS research and test facilities provide a more convenient application programming interface (API), i.e. the Parlay API, which accelerates the development of new customer services significantly. Thus based on that API, mobile operators can better leverage the technical features of their infrastructure and open new revenue streams by activating a huge number of software developers designing innovative applications.

German software vendor Derdack has already today global experiences in opening the infrastructure of mobile operators to 3rd party content providers and application developers. With installations of its product message master(tm) xsp in over 40 countries and with around 100 service providers and mobile operators Derdack knows the limits of today's offerings and is intensively working on new solutions to offer convenient access to mobile operator's billing, telephony, SMS and MMS infrastructure.

Derdack's flagship software message master(tm) xsp is now also running as part of the Fraunhofer FOKUS 3G UMTS test bed. Derdack and FOKUS have started to investigate how future software platforms for mobile operators and service providers have to be designed in order to increase productivity of mobile application developers.

"The cooperation with FOKUS provides us with the great opportunity to glimpse into the future of mobile services and applications", says Matthes Derdack, Managing Director and co-founder of Derdack. "We hope to better understand the design requirements combining research and our real-life experience we are making. This is going to deliver unique results." "We recognise with satisfaction, that our globally unique test bed infrastructure and our technology competence is enabling the local industry to gain a leading role in the global mobile communications business" states Prof. Dr. Thomas Magedanz, Head of the FOKUS 3Gbeyond Testbed and Professor for Next Generation Networks at the Technical University of Berlin. "We are convinced that Open wireless test beds, like the FOKUS one, will be of prime importance to stimulate the mobile applications market."
