WirelessDevNet.com Press Release
QUALCOMM Introduces Hours of Service Electronic On-board Recording Application for OmniTRACS
SAN DIEGO, April 25 -- QUALCOMM Incorporated
(Nasdaq: QCOM), the leading provider of wireless data solutions, today
announced that its Hours of Service application, an automated system for use
with QUALCOMM's OmniTRACS solution, will be available to the trucking industry
in summer 2005. The Hours of Service application makes use of the electronic
on-board recorder (EOBR) embedded in the OmniTRACS solution, and complies with
section 395.15 of U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations
governing the use of EOBRs to document compliance with DOT hours of service
regulations. QUALCOMM's Hours of Service application also complies with the
recently revised hours of service regulations from the DOT.
Improving dispatch decisions helps increase productivity and maximize
miles per truck per day, so the QUALCOMM Hours of Service application was
designed as a proactive management tool, enabling fleets to optimize dispatch
assignments by providing accurate, near real-time driver availability
information to the load planning process. As a web-based software service,
the information is delivered to the dispatch system via a web interface, or
can be viewed online with a web browser. The automated record keeping system
helps reduce costs substantially by eliminating manual maintenance and
processing of paper logs, as well as by mitigating driver violations and fines
associated with non-compliance. In addition, the Hours of Service application
runs on the OmniTRACS platform, thereby minimizing up-front investment and
driver training to deploy.
"QUALCOMM is proud to offer our new and existing customers a complete
system to improve regulatory compliance through the creation of automated,
accurate hours-of-service logs," said Joan Waltman, president of QUALCOMM
Wireless Business Solutions. "Beyond DOT compliance, we wanted our Hours of
Service application to provide functions that significantly increase the
productivity and efficiency of drivers, dispatchers and load planners."
QUALCOMM's Hours of Service system features:
* Automatic driving time detection using vehicle sensor data, minimizing
driver interaction and data entry
* Web interface for review of driver status, availability and reports
* Up-to-date driver availability information for dispatch optimization
through web services
* Automatic hours of service reports for driver management and safety
audits, also eliminating the expenses associated with paper logs
* Near real-time notification to drivers and dispatch of impending or
actual violations
* Support hotline available for roadside inspections 24 hours a day, seven
days a week
