Nokia Joins University of Georgia's Mobile Media Consortium
ATLANTA, April 29 -- Nokia (NYSE: NOK) announced
today it has joined the University of Georgia's Mobile Media Consortium (MMC),
an industry/academic group committed to exploring ideas that improve the
quality of life while creating demand for mobility and wireless content,
networks, and devices.
Additionally, Nokia will participate in the MMC's "Go Mobile or Go Home!"
event, where students will use Nokia 6620 smartphones to demonstrate
applications they've created based on text and multimedia messaging services.
The Nokia 6620 is compatible with Cingular's high-speed nationwide EDGE
network that enables fast access to data applications.
"The Mobile Media Consortium is discovering the future of mobile media,"
said Scott Shamp, Director of the Mobile Media Consortium. "With its
innovative technology, Nokia is playing a vital role in shaping this future.
We are excited to have them join the team of industry leading partners in the
Consortium. This semester we turned students loose with the Nokia 6620
smartphone -- and stood back. Every week, students were showing us something
new -- video, moblogs, SMS polls. At Go Mobile the student projects will
demonstrate how Nokia's powerful mobile media tools will change our lives."
The Go Mobile event is this Saturday, April 30, at UGA's Student Learning
Center. Attendees will experience student-developed mobile media projects
using the latest in wireless technology and devices, and will hear from a
broad range of industry experts, including Cingular, Apple, CNN and
McDonald's.
"The Mobile Media Consortium is an excellent example of how fostering
innovation in the academic arena can expand the possibilities of a
fast-growing industry like wireless communications," said Andrew Button,
director of marketing and strategy, Nokia Networks. "Given our presence in
Atlanta, Nokia is thrilled to be part of the MMC's exploration of the power
and potential of mobile media and wireless technology." Button will be
speaking at the event at 2:45 p.m. Eastern time about the latest in wireless
technology and network services.
