Siemens to Install First Private GSM Network in Nepal Contract Valued at 29 Million US-Dollars
Siemens Communications has won a contract from Spice Nepal Pvt. Ltd., the country’s first private-sector mobile operator, to build a nationwide GSM network. Over the course of the coming two and a half years, Siemens will supply, install and put into operation a turnkey infrastructure valued at a total of some 29 million US-Dollars. One million mobile subscribers in Nepal will then be able to make and receive phone calls over the GSM network.
Under the terms of the contract with Spice Nepal, Siemens will be the sole supplier of switches, base stations and microwave technology for the GSM network. “Together with Siemens, we want to set new standards for our country in telecommunications, which is now really beginning to pick up steam. The contract with Siemens will offer unparalleled benefits to our customers,” said Spice Nepal CEO Damir Karassayev. Dmitry Fosty, CTO of Spice Nepal: "The contract includes state-of-the-art radio base stations with all the related equipment to provide an excellent network performance, quality and coverage. Our partnership with Siemens will help us to achieve our target of providing high quality and a wider range of telecommunication services to the people of Nepal".
Siemens is the first company in Nepal to receive a contract from a private-sector operator to supply mobile technology. “This contract is a milestone for us. It marks our entry into the mobile market in Nepal,” said Christoph Caselitz, the President of the Mobile Networks Division at Siemens Communications.
Spice Nepal
Spice Nepal (Pvt) Ltd.: Initially licensed 3 years ago to operate GSM mobile network in the Kingdom of Nepal, SNPL was acquired by Raj Group Co. (P) Ltd. last year from the Khetan Group. Now the company has investment from VISOR, an investment company of Kazakhstan, which is involved in numerous telecommunications projects in CIS countries. Spice Nepal plans to launch its mobile phone services by the end of August, 2005, initially in Katmandu Valley area and gradually expanding to cover all major cities in Nepal.
