Hate is The New Love as Distones Buzz Spreads Across The Web
Mobile entertainment firm Moderati is generating a lot of buzz for DisTones, ringtones to assign to people you loathe. Bloggers across the world seem to be interested in a new era of mobile media that focuses on irreverence and passive aggression symbolized by Moderati’s DisTone service.
“Having your phone ring all day long with the latest hip-hop hit is SO 2003,” said Cindy Lundin Mesaros, vice president of marketing for Moderati. “Those with enemies, like me, let their phone screen calls for them, assigning songs like American Idiot, Shut Up and F.U. Right Back to choice callers.”
For the ultimate dis, Moderati offers its silent ringtone, which effectively shuts down callers by sending them to voice mail without their knowledge. For a limited time, customers with an axe to grind can download the silent ringtone for free from www.modtones.com. It even comes in different flavors: extra quiet silence, and a hip-hop version of silence. The company plans to offers both polyphonic (synthesized) silence for $1.99, and the master file, or “actual real live” silence, for $2.99.
Says Jeremy Xavier, creative director of Moderati, “For sizzurp heads, we flew to Texas to get a well-known DJ to do a screwed and chopped version of silence for us. That mellow, deep sound of the screwed version makes the silence infinitely cooler.”
Featured Distones include:
Naggin – Ying Yang Twins
The @$$hole is calling – original voice & music tone
Shut Up – Black Eyed Peas
Little Ding Dong – original voice & music tone
DisTones are available through www.modtones.com or at the special promotional site www.distones.com. Modtones is supported by most major wireless carriers, or on the handset for Verizon Wireless customers by downloading the Modtones application from Get it Now®.
