Police Use SMS Text Messaging to Create Community Alert Network

New York, December 8th 2005 - Emexus, a global mobile services company, provided the Netherlands police force with a special alert system which uses SMS mobile technology to improve local security and provide a communication system for alarming local residents in case of a crisis. After a very successful pilot in Tilburg, the Dutch police force is now ready to roll out the service to the rest of the Netherlands, starting in Rotterdam and Amsterdam. The SMS alert system allows local residents to subscribe according to their zip code, and receive SMS text alerts from the police regarding activity in their community.

The SMS alert pilot was awarded the prestigious Hein Roethofprijs, a prize for the most effective and innovative crime prevention project in the Netherlands. Roland van Veen, project leader at West Brabant police force: "During the pilot we were able to locate 4 missing children after sending out a SMS to all subscribers with the children's description and last known location." The alert system also resulted in arrests of several robbers and helped to notify citizens when there was an active burglar in their residential area.

The project has received broad international interest from police forces and private security firms. "Police forces in the US stated that this system could have helped a great deal with alerting citizens for Hurricane Katrina", comments Police Chief Heeres. "SMS is a very cost-effective and quick way of distributing time critical information and thus a perfect fit with the police need to alert the community in case of a crisis. "
