WirelessDevNet.com Press Release

Jaluna Drives Smartphone Multimedia Applications into Mid-Range High-Volume Mobile Phones

SANTA CLARA, Calif.-- Dec. 12, 2005--Jaluna:

  • Next release of Jaluna OSware, Linux Edition for ARM(R) processors available now

  • Operators increase revenue-generating value added services with Jaluna OSware

  • Philips Semiconductors selects Jaluna OSware, Linux Edition for ARM technology, to support mass-market mobile phone initiatives

Jaluna, the global leader in virtual infrastructure software for connected devices and networks, today announced that Jaluna OSware(TM), Linux Edition for the ARM9(TM) family will drive smartphone capabilities into mid-range feature phones. Original equipment manufacturers that leverage Jaluna OSware and the ARM9 technologies will enhance revenue-generating value added services, including Web browsing, e-mail, calendaring and high-end multimedia applications such as audio and video. Additionally, Philips Semiconductors has selected Jaluna OSware, Linux Edition for the ARM9 family as part of its chipset solution for new 2.75G / 3G mobile phones.

"ARM recognizes the rapid growth of Linux and its relevance to future multimedia devices," said Mary Inglis, director, Operating Systems and Alliances, ARM. "This new Jaluna OSware solution for ARM9 family processors will enable our partners to capitalize on the Linux growth trend by implementing a dual operating system strategy, enabling a broader range of applications and environments to co-exist on individual platforms."

According to Canalys, the global market share of Linux in mobile phones has more than doubled in each of the first three quarters of 2005. But this accounts only for high-end smartphones, which require an additional application processor to run a rich operating system (RichOS) such as Linux, Windows or Symbian and their applications. RichOSs can now find their way into high volume, cheaper single processor feature phones, with the help of Jaluna OSware's virtualization solution that supports the wireless protocol stack and its native real-time operating system (RTOS) together with the RichOS on a single processor.

"Original equipment manufacturers in the mobile phone market require software solutions that provide enhanced functionality to end-user devices," said Michel Gien, executive vice president of Corporate Development for Jaluna. "Jaluna OSware provides an innovative and affordable solution for manufacturers using the ARM9 family, allowing them to leverage their existing RTOS investment, while also incorporating best-of-breed, Linux and other RichOS based applications."

Jaluna OSware, Linux Edition for the ARM9 family offers a virtualization solution that enables wireless handset manufacturers to develop ARM9 family-based embedded Linux software that can:

  • Leverage legacy software and existing modem protocol stacks

  • Preserve native RTOS and Linux native behaviors

  • Allow multiple operating systems and their respective applications to co-exist and interoperate on the same device

Jaluna OSware provides the operating system (OS) independence required to deliver a broad spectrum of implementations. By supporting ARM technology, Jaluna preserves RTOS and Linux native behaviors and provides advanced features for mobile phones, including power management, fine grain OS scheduling and cross-OS communication, which translates into substantial cost savings for Jaluna's customers, including Philips Semiconductors.
