Mobile Edge Insulates Bluetooth Phones From Hackers
ANAHEIM, CA, — Dec. 12, 2005 – Mobile Edge, the premiere designer of stylish notebook carrying cases and accessories for your portable computer, has launched a counter attack targeting Bluetooth hackers with its exclusive Wireless Security Shield™.
With the increase in popularity of Bluetooth-enabled products such as cell phones, PDAs, headphones, printers, computers, and even cars, comes an increase in cyber thieves illegally accessing these devices with bluesnarfing, bluejacking, bluebugging, and even back door Trojan horse-style virus attacks.
According to recent articles, a virus called Cabir is capable of being spread via Bluetooth connections and can infect the most popular cell phones, exploiting vulnerability specific to the phone’s code.
Bluesnafing enables an attacker to remotely download contact information from victims’ address books, read their calendar appointments or peruse text messages on their phones to conduct corporate espionage. The attacker can track his victim, send malicious messages to the victim’s contacts, and gain access to the Internet via the victim’s account. In a video available on the Internet, some young computer experts demonstrated how they could access a Bluetooth enabled phone from up to 1.1 miles away, downloading all the victim’s contacts to prove the vulnerability.
Consumer research indicates that by year 2008, 53 percent of all phones globally will have Bluetooth technology and 65 percent in the U.S. Bluetooth technology is also being built into cars, laptops, home security systems, and medical devices.
Mobile Edge identified this threat and has countered would-be hackers by integrating the Wireless Security Shield™ accessories pocket into their newest laptop carrying cases. This technology was first developed by NASA to help block out electromagnetic waves and radio frequencies to prevent any malfunctioning of their equipment. The conductive fibers woven into the material will effectively reduce up to 99 percent of radio frequencies and electromagnetic waves, keeping devices safe and secure.
“Attacks on Bluetooth-enabled phones and other devices are serious,” said Lewis Lustman, Mobile Edge’s marketing director. “If a virus infects a Bluetooth-enabled phone while a victim is walking around, the virus can be spread to Bluetooth-enabled computers, printers, other cell phones, or other products without the victim even being aware anything has taken place. By putting their cell phone or PDA into the Wireless Security Shield™ within our bags, users can prevent malicious attacks,” said Lustman.
A side benefit is that the Wireless Security Shield™ will also keep incoming calls from reaching cell phones placed within it, a nice feature for those who forget to turn off their phones during meetings.
