Cirond Explains WiPhishing Wireless Security Threat and Solutions at San Francisco Conference
SAN JOSE, Calif.--
Cirond Corporation (OTCBB:CROO) today announced that Cirond CEO Nicholas Miller, who recently created the word "WiPhishing" to describe the wireless network security threat faced by the more than 100 million wireless laptops in use worldwide, will speak about it - and associated wireless-borne security dangers - at the Security Research Associates Spring Technology & Life Sciences Investor Conference, to be held at Campton Place Hotel, 340 Stockton Street, San Francisco on Monday, February 28, 2005.
This conference kicks off Security Research Associates' 25th year of providing value-added research to institutional investors, and investment banking services to some of the fastest growing technology & life sciences companies in the country. Conference attendees will include select group of institutional portfolio managers and analysts, and will feature CEOs from some of the fastest growing technology & life sciences companies in the small cap arena.
Mr. Miller will explain the new and growing security risks facing users of wireless-equipped laptop computers and companies whose employees use these devices, and review Cirond's range of innovative solutions that address these risks. Following more than a year of research and development by Cirond around the network security threats faced by wireless laptops, Mr. Miller coined the word "WiPhishing" to describe this threat. It is a threat serious enough that it can expose all the shared information on a user's laptop computer - and potentially even information on traditional wired computer networks - to wireless "hacking".
It has also gained the attention of print, online (throughout the past few weeks, Google has listed up to 40,000 sites containing the keyword 'WiPhishing') and TV media (to date more than 40 TV stations have carried Cirond's story on the topic) throughout the world, with extensive coverage of this issue.
WiPhishing occurs when a hacker covertly sets up a wireless-enabled laptop or access point for the purpose of getting wireless laptops to connect to it by "impersonating" a wireless network that a laptop is set up to automatically connect to.
By doing this, hackers can potentially gain access to confidential data stored on the laptop and any conventional network to which that laptop is connected. Also, hackers can use this technique to introduce computer viruses, worms or even "keystroke loggers" onto the laptop or connected corporate network. WiPhishing hackers don't even have to be in the same building as the victim, as wireless network technology can allow them to "attract" wireless-equipped laptops from across the street or even the parking lot.
