Introducing the Standardized Platform for a Wide Variety of Multimedia Services
Mobile network operator mmO2 has commissioned Siemens Communications to supply its mobile network with a commercial IMS (IP-based Multimedia Subsystem) solution. IMS is a 3GPP standardized platform that makes it easier for carriers to integrate multimedia services in mobile and fixed networks regardless of the access technologies. The frame contract foresees Siemens Communications to install several IMS network elements and services in mmO2’s networks. The operator expects the commercial availability of first multimedia services based on IMS to be Push-and-Talk, chat, instant and multimedia messaging.
“We are impressed by Siemens’ performance and capabilities in the field of IP-based mobile infrastructure and services,” says Dave Williams, chief technology officer, O2. “Today’s announcement supports O2’s plans to develop an ‘all-IP’ multimedia communications infrastructure by 2007. This will help stimulate new mobile data revenue streams as well as drive down ongoing operational costs by eliminating duplication across current multiple service specific networks and creating a single multi-service hub.”
"With the early introduction of an IMS in its network mmO2 underlines its position as a future-oriented and innovative mobile operator," says Christoph Caselitz, President of the Mobile Networks Division at Siemens Communications. "With more than 30 trial systems for IMS worldwide we bring in our broad expertise and we're looking forward to help mmO2 establish a broad variety of powerful IP-based mobile services."
The IP-based Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is a 3GPP standardized control domain for applications and services. IMS allows mobile and fixed carriers to offer their customers a series of features not possible with proprietary services such as MMS or mobile video services available today. This includes for instance the ability to combine and use data and voice applications synchronously in any possible combination: while phoning, chatting, or using a Push-and-Talk connection on the mobile phone, it is also possible at the same time to send images or video clips or call up an internet site. Furthermore, IMS connects the mobile applications to a common authentication and billing system. As a result, users need log on only once for all applications and enter their billing data in the system also only once.
Background on Siemens IMS@vantage
Siemens IMS@vantage, the product line for IP-based multimedia services and session control, offers a secure infrastructure for IP-based multimedia applications. It is based on the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), a signaling protocol for conference, phone, and instant message applications. These multimedia applications can utilize a variety of IMS@vantage network services, such as session control (registration, routing, roaming), secure authentication and confidentiality, flexible cost determination and payment, quality-of-service support, as well as presence, location, and push services. In addition to these basic services, IMS@vantage also supports communication among the worldwide telephone network (PSTN), the CS domain, ISP networks, and the internet, and thus represents the perfect link between network services and mobile applications.
