WirelessDevNet.com Press Release
Wireless Publishers and Developers Cash in on the BREW(R) Solution
SAN DIEGO, June 2 QUALCOMM Incorporated
(Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access
(CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced that BREW publishers and
developers have earned more than $350 million to date from the sale of
wireless applications and services developed for the BREW solution. Today's
milestone is a tremendous achievement for the international community of BREW
publishers and developers when compared to the more than $200 million in
earnings announced in October 2004. These numbers are strong validation of
the success that the solution enables and a key indicator of the popularity of
wireless data worldwide. Currently, there are 45 commercial operators in
24 countries offering wireless data services based on the BREW solution.
"BREW has been an extremely effective distribution mechanism with all the
components necessary to make mobile entertainment successful," said James
Eberhard, CEO of 9 Squared. "BREW has brought definition to the mobile
ecosystem and allowed each player to focus on their core strengths. BREW has
allowed 9 Squared to develop and globally distribute rich mobile content that
is translating to significant dollars a month in sales from our applications."
"AGI is generating tremendous revenue each month from our BREW-based
applications -- enabling Def Jam Mobile, Univision Movil, Blue Mountain Mobile
and MIDIringtones to rapidly expand on a global basis," said Bryan Biniak,
senior vice president and general manager of Mobile, AG Interactive.
"QUALCOMM's BREW platform has enabled us to build a powerful mobile media
application that enables easy previewing and purchasing of our extensive array
of TrueTones, Artist Voice Tones, Wallpapers and more," said Tim Nilson, vice
president, Global MobileTechnology, SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT. "We are
thrilled that SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT's Music Box has become one of the
largest revenue generating BREW applications in the world and the largest in
North America."
"Sorrent's BREW revenue was up 170 percent in the first quarter of 2005
over the same period in 2004," said Rocky Pimentel, chief financial officer,
Sorrent, Inc. "Sorrent's growth and success with BREW demonstrates the
platform's strength in enabling developers and publishers to quickly and
cost-effectively develop and deploy quality products to multiple handsets
around the world."
"The widespread success of BREW publishers and developers demonstrates the
BREW solution's superb ability to support companies of all sizes in realizing
their full revenue potential," said Peggy Johnson, president of QUALCOMM
Internet Services. "By providing the tools and resources necessary for the
development and delivery of wireless content, publishers and developers can
concentrate on what they do best -- creating compelling, fun and useful
applications, which translates directly into revenue gains for the mobile
marketplace value chain."
Earnings figures were calculated based on payments made by QUALCOMM to
developers and on reports from certain BREW operators on what they had paid to
their publishers and developers. 9 Squared, AG Interactive, SONY BMG MUSIC
ENTERTAINMENT and Sorrent will be showcasing their portfolio of wireless
offerings during the BREW 2005 Conference, taking place June 1-3 in San Diego.
