Symbol Launches RFID Reader Capable of Hosting Third Party Applications

HOLTSVILLE, N.Y., June 6 Symbol Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: SBL), The Enterprise Mobility Company(TM), today introduced the Symbol XR400, an enterprise-class radio-frequency identification (RFID) reader that can host real-time application processing at the point of business activity. Early adopters are already using the Symbol XR400 reader to manage and move data instantly upon reading the RFID tag, reducing inefficiencies and improving asset visibility.

The Symbol XR400, the first commercially deployed reader to support the Windows(R) CE(R) operating system, allows end users and partners to easily develop applications that can be hosted directly on the reader. This customization enables a diverse range of real-world applications, including inventory management in retail warehouses and outlets; baggage tracking in airports; and "build to order" factory processes that correspond with data routed from the reader.

The XR400 reader builds on Symbol's commercially proven AR400 RFID reader integrating reliable read performance designed for enterprise-scale RFID implementations. The reader is capable of supporting all Electronic Product Code (EPC) Generation 1 tags-both Class 0 and Class 1-and will offer full support for the EPC Generation 2 (Gen 2) protocol via a future firmware upgrade. This flexibility enables customers to start deploying the XR400 today to address their business needs as standards evolve.

"By allowing customers to manage and move information instantly upon data capture, the XR400 truly extends business intelligence to the edge of the enterprise," said Phil Lazo, vice president and general manager of Symbol's RFID Infrastructure Division. "The XR400 builds upon our diverse customer experience with large-scale RFID implementations. Adding to Symbol's comprehensive product platform, the XR400 supports customers from RFID pilot through full scale deployment."

The new XR400 reader also integrates general-purpose input/output ports and USB host support to manage devices ranging from light sensors and alarms to web cameras and display screens. With these peripherals, enterprises can use RFID to activate various business processes, including dynamic assembly lines that are reconfigured based on the specific products being received on the conveyer belt; real time alerts that stop forklift drivers from delivering products to the wrong location; and "handle with care" rules that signal an item's fragility at the moment it passes through the dock door reader.

Symbol plans to demonstrate the XR400 publicly for the first time at Microsoft's TechEd conference to be held in Orlando, Fla., June 5-10. "RFID is an increasingly important data source for the enterprise," said Kevin Dallas, general manager, Mobile and Embedded Devices Division at Microsoft Corp. "Innovative RFID devices such as the XR400, which leverages the power of Windows CE to create powerful embedded application platforms, will play a key role in enabling widespread adoption of RFID technology." The XR400 is based on the world's most widely deployed EPC-compliant reader platform, the RFID standard of choice globally for high-performance supply chain management and asset tracking applications. The EPC standard is currently being mandated by a number of leading global retailers and the United States Department of Defense as a means to increase supply chain visibility and efficiency.
