Mobile Content Ecosystem Embraces Macromedia Flash Platform

SAN FRANCISCO-- June 6, 2005--Macromedia, Inc. (Nasdaq:MACR) today announced significant milestones in the adoption of Macromedia Flash(R) throughout the mobile content ecosystem, a thriving business environment that consists of mobile device manufacturers, operators, and developers. During the past year, shipments of mobile devices running Flash nearly tripled from 12 to 35 million units. Three of the six leading mobile device manufacturers, up from one last year, now license Flash to deliver great mobile experiences to their global customers. During the same period, the number of operators supporting Flash content and services surged from 1 to 12. Supporting this adoption spike is the Macromedia Flash Platform (announced today, see separate release), a complete system that includes the Macromedia Flash Lite(TM) client runtime and time-tested development tools. The fast-growing mobile market segment offers an unprecedented opportunity for the Flash developer community -- more than one million strong today -- to make great digital experiences possible.

To date, over 100 device manufacturers license Macromedia Flash -- up from 88 a year ago -- to deliver great consumer experiences on their branded consumer electronics devices, such as mobile phones, portable media players, PDAs, and other devices. These licensees include leading mobile device manufacturers Nokia, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson.

"We are excited about embedding Macromedia Flash technology into the Nokia platform to empower developers and operators around the world to create and deliver rich, interactive content and applications faster and more cost-effectively than ever before," said Lee Epting, vice president, Forum Nokia. "We're confident that integrating Flash technology into our platform will help drive the adoption of smartphones as well as boost data usage and operator ARPU."

Leading operators KDDI and NTT DoCoMo, as well as nine others, are now supporting Flash content and services. All but one were signed within the past year. Examples of enriched business benefits for these operators include offering enhanced browsing and online services, custom user interfaces, and unified experiences across branded devices and data services.

Flash developers can take advantage of the new opportunities offered by this expanding mobile ecosystem. Thousands of games, user interfaces, portals, and other mobile Flash applications have been developed and deployed to date. The recently released Yankee Group report, "Under the Yankee Group Microscope: NTT DoCoMo's Experience with Flash Lite," emphasizes how Flash has become a de facto standard in Japan. According to the report, "Sophisticated information services using Flash Lite have characterized the first wave of innovation... More than 60% of the 4,400 official i-mode sites are based on Flash Lite." To read the full report, please visit http://www.macromedia.com/go/docomo_flashlite.

"The mobile world works differently than the traditional software world. We're seeing that Japan's mobile ecosystem has been the first to reap the benefits of the Flash Platform," said Al Ramadan, executive vice president and general manager of mobile and devices, Macromedia. "Approximately 15% of the Japanese population has Flash enabled phones, and we're seeing this success move across to Europe and the US."

Macromedia's mobile offerings include Macromedia Flash Lite, Macromedia FlashCast(TM), and the Macromedia Flash authoring tool. Flash Lite is the Flash profile specifically developed for mobile phones. FlashCast is an end-to-end solution to meet the demands for compelling, consistently updated, easy-to-use mobile data services. The Flash authoring tool enables designers and developers to create rich content and applications across desktops and devices.
