SAFLINK and Microsoft Develop Mobile Device Security Platform for Department of Defense

BELLEVUE, Wash., June 20 -- SAFLINK® Corporation (Nasdaq: SFLK - News), a leading provider of biometric and smart card security solutions, today announced an agreement with Microsoft® Corporation (Nasdaq: MSFT - News) to provide a mobile security solution in support of FIPS 201 and HSPD-12 requirements related to the mobile environment. The first version of the software under the agreement has been delivered. SAFLINK developed the new software based on its NetSign® CAC smart card middleware specifically for use with Microsoft Windows Mobile(TM) 5.0 for Pocket PCs. The resulting product -- part of a complete mobile solution including Axcess Technology, Inc. mobile smart card readers -- allows the companies to target the public sector's overall identity protection and management initiative for mobile devices, delivering the same high level of network security and strong authentication currently used within the CAC program.

"The agreement and our delivery of software for the Pocket PC marks the first mobile device security initiative for SAFLINK," said Jeff Affuso, President of the Public Sector Division of SAFLINK. "The rising use of mobile devices in the government is driving the need to extend network security for mobile device users. Joining forces with Microsoft to leverage our experience with the Department of Defense and other government entities will allow us to deliver an integrated security platform for mobile devices that is easy to use and offers the strongest form of authentication available today."

Currently, over half a million SAFLINK NetSign CAC licenses are deployed throughout the government to improve network and desktop security by enabling enrollees to securely log on to PCs, applications and Web sites, to digitally sign and encrypt email communications, and to use other PKI-enabled applications. SAFLINK has been working closely with Microsoft to bring the same flexibility and security of NetSign CAC to Windows Mobile-based devices already in use by employees enrolled in the CAC program.

"SAFLINK's solution for the Windows Mobile 5.0 environment meets the core mobile security requirements within the DoD and the Department of Homeland Security as well as the emerging specifications within key civilian agencies," said Curt Kolcun, General Manager of Microsoft Federal. "By enabling the integration of core mobile technologies into mission critical information systems, SAFLINK continues to demonstrate the ability to meet the short-term objectives of government agencies."

A Certified Microsoft Partner, SAFLINK and Microsoft have a history of joining forces to target new market opportunities. The companies recently announced a partnership to solicit interest in a privatized version of the Registered Traveler program, a major initiative spearheaded by the Transportation Security Administration under the auspices of the Department of Homeland Security to make airport security checkpoints more convenient for frequent travelers.
