WirelessDevNet.com Press Release
Sun Microsystems Sweeps Developer.com Product of the Year Awards
SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 1 -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW - News), the creator and leading advocate of Java(TM) technology, today announced that six of its developer products and technologies have been named winners in Developer.com's annual Product of the Year Awards. The Sun products and technologies that were recognized by developers as winners among the hundreds of nominations were Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE(TM) platform), Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE(TM) platform), Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME(TM) platform) Wireless Toolkit, Java Web Services Developer Pack (Java WSDP), Sun Java Studio Creator software and NetBeans(TM) software.
"Sun's product roadmap for developers calls for a range of products and technologies to match the diverse needs of different developer constituencies," said Bradley Jones, executive editor of EarthWeb.com's Software Development Channel. "Over the last year, Sun has delivered on this vision. By expanding its product line with brand new offerings like Java Studio Creator software and stepping up its commitment to the NetBeans software open source project, the creator of Java technology has brought to market a broad and innovative line of products."
"We have invested significant time and development resources in diversifying and advancing our developer offerings, and with the results of these awards, that effort is clearly being recognized," said Joe Keller, vice president, marketing, Java Web Services and Development Platforms, Sun Microsystems. "We owe thanks to our enthusiastic developer community for this success. We truly appreciate their input and commitment to our industry- leading technologies and look forward to continuing collaboration in this area."
Details of the Developer.com accolades:
The Technology of the Year award went to the Standard Edition of the
Java Platform, J2SE platform 5.0, the most significant upgrade to the
Java platform and programming language in nearly a decade. The J2SE
platform is one of the largest-scale projects ever developed through
the Java Community Process(SM) (JCP(SM)), involving nearly 160 expert
members, derived from the work of 15 component Java Specification
Requests (JSRs), and implementing more than 100 features.
J2EE platform, the Enterprise Edition of the Java Platform, secured
recognition as the Enterprise Development Tool of the Year. The J2EE
platform simplifies enterprise applications by basing them on
standardized, modular components, by providing a complete set of
services to those components, and by handling many details of
application behavior automatically, without complex programming.
Sun's J2ME Wireless Toolkit 2.2 won the Wireless/Mobile Development
category for the second year in a row. The toolkit's market-leading
support for advanced J2ME APIs, ease-of-use and impressive features
make it an indispensable tool for mobile application developers looking
to leverage the 579 million Java platform-enabled mobile phones
worldwide.
Web Service Tool of the Year went to the Java Web Services Developer
Pack (Java WSDP), an integrated toolkit developers can use to build,
test and deploy XML applications, Web services and Web applications
with the latest technologies and standards implementations. The Java
WSDP is available at no charge.
The winner of the Java Tool of the Year category was Sun Java Studio
Creator, the premier next-generation tool for Java-based Web
application development. The tool combines the power of 100 percent
Java standards with simplified visual development techniques to give
developers the most effective, most productive way to build
applications in Java.
The NetBeans Integrated Development Environment (IDE) was awarded Open
Source Tool of the Year. NetBeans IDE 4.0 was the first IDE to support
the new J2SE platform 5.0 language features, and is the first to base
its project system entirely on Apache Ant.
