Renesas Technology Announces H.324M Video Conferencing Software
TOKYO & SAN JOSE, Calif.--March 29, 2005--Renesas Technology Corp. today announced the Mobile Videophone
Middleware Package software, which adds a video conferencing
capability to Renesas Technology's popular SH-Mobile(1) series of
application processors. The new videophone software conforms to the
3G-324M(2) third-generation (3G) mobile phone audiovisual (AV)
communications standard and incorporates an echo-canceller function
for mobile phone systems that use these application processors.
Renesas SH-Mobile chips are the world's most popular co-processors for
implementing multimedia functions in mobile phones.
The new software is available for the SH-MobileV2 device (type
name: SH7310) and SH-Mobile3 device (type name: SH73180), both of
which have built-in MPEG-4(3) full hardware accelerators. The software
offers the following features:
(1) Capabilities that accelerate and simplify videophone
application development
The Mobile Videophone Middleware Package software enables quick
and easy development of 3G-324M compliant videophone functions in
mobile phone systems that incorporate SH-Mobile application
processors. It includes all of the processing functions specified in
the 3G-324M audiovisual communications standard.
(2) Echo-canceller and noise-suppression functions that simplify
phone designs
The software provides the echo-cancellation and noise-suppression
functions that otherwise would have to be implemented by dedicated
external chips. Eliminating these external devices reduces the cost of
manufacturing mobile phone systems.
(3) An optimized signal-processing algorithm that allows the use
of a low CPU operating frequency to save power
Algorithm optimization enables the capabilities of the MPEG-4 full
hardware accelerator and DSP (digital signal processor) in SH-Mobile
devices to be used to the fullest possible extent. With the Mobile
Videophone Middleware Package software, the moving-image
compression/decompression processing (15 frame per second) and voice
compression/decompression processing can be implemented at a low CPU
operating frequency, about 90MHz. This reduces system power
consumption, helping to extend battery life of the phone.
Product Background
Mobile phone systems are offering more and more advanced
multimedia capabilities, such as games and moving images. One trend is
to incorporate videophone functions in 3G mobile phone systems.
However, videophone applications require multiplexing operations,
protocol processing and other tasks, besides moving-image voice
compression/decompression processing. This necessitates a great amount
of development work.
The Mobile Videophone Middleware Package software from Renesas
Technology eliminates the need for phone designers to perform this
development. The software provides the single-function middleware
items essential for developing 3G mobile phone systems with videophone
functions. It also offers valuable features such as 3G-324M compliance
and an echo-canceller function.
The Mobile Videophone Middleware Package software will be
available in May 2005.
Because mobile phone multimedia applications are certain to become
more sophisticated in the future, Renesas Technology will continue to
create new solutions that meet users' needs. Development plans
encompass products such as IP-network compatible SH-Mobile videophone
middleware.
