WirelessDevNet.com Press Release
Over-The-Air Download and Install Now Available for Palm OS Applications with One Touch of a Button
PalmSource, Inc. provider of Palm OS®, a leading operating system powering next generation mobile devices and smartphones, announced today that Motricity, a premier provider of mobile content to consumers, is adopting the PalmSource Installer 1.5 as its preferred technology for the web and over-the-air ( OTA ) delivery of Palm OS applications to Palm Powered™ devices. Motricity user interfaces will be enhanced with the PalmSource Installer's easy one-touch software download and install functionality, which is designed to further boost the adoption of wireless Palm OS applications and provide enhanced user experience.
PalmSource Installer is a core component of the Palm OS® platform that makes it easier for Palm OS users to discover and take advantage of third party Palm OS applications by simplifying the downloading and installation of applications over-the-air and via PalmSource™ Desktop HotSync® technology anywhere you go.
With just a single click from a mobile device or desktop browser, PalmSource Installer automatically chooses the correct variants of an application to download and install on any Palm Powered™ mobile device. It makes intelligent choices by detecting a user's device requirements, based upon memory, screen resolution, default language, version of the operating system and device type.
The PalmSource Installer bridges the gap between desktop and wireless application installation, allowing applications installed wirelessly to automatically install any desktop components needed on the PC during the next PalmSource synchronization operation. This capability is unique to the PalmSource Installer, and provides for a user experience that is unrivaled in power and simplicity.
"We chose to support PalmSource Installer because it is a solid solution that eliminates barriers in the customer's Palm installation process," said Ryan Wuerch, chairman and chief executive officer at Motricity. "The ability to download and install software with one click will provide a greatly enhanced application experience for customers, which in turn will result in increased business for us and our third-party developer partners."
Motricity has committed to support the PalmSource Installer format and will promote the distribution of Palm OS applications in the Installer format within its OTA and Web platforms, including the PalmSource Software Store ( palmsource.palmgear.com ) and the PalmGear.com store ( www.palmgear.com ).
"Motricity is the first major provider of mobile content and applications to fully embrace the PalmSource Installer and bring these advantages to customers," said David Nagel, president and CEO of PalmSource, Inc. "We believe that the PalmSource Installer will substantially broaden the reach of Palm OS® applications by creating a compelling user experience in a world which is becoming increasingly wireless."
