Siemens to Supply GSM/EDGE Mobile Technology to GPC in Vietnam
Vietnam’s largest mobile provider, Vietnam Telecom Services Company (GPC), has contracted with Siemens to expand its mobile network. The Siemens Com-munications Group will be supplying and installing GSM/EDGE mobile communi-cation technology for GPC’s network in southern Vietnam.
The contract with GPC includes upgrading the network with GSM/EDGE-capable base stations and base station controllers, as well as network optimization services. “We have been working together with Siemens since we first launched our mobile services in 1996, and are highly satisfied with the performance and quality of its mobile technology. Expansion of the network will allow us to meet the target of reaching 1.3 million addi-tional subscribers by the end of this year. Moreover, EDGE will allow us to also offer our customers fast mobile data services in the future,” explained Pham Quang Hao, Vice Director of GPC.
“Southeast Asia is considered to be one of the world’s most important growth markets for mobile communication. In Vietnam, only 5.6 percent of the country’s 82 million peo-ple are making their phone calls the mobile way,” said Christoph Caselitz, President of Mobile Networks at Siemens Communications.
GPC, a subsidiary of the government-owned Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Corporation, offers its mobile communication services in Vietnam under the “Vina-Phone” name. GPC is the leader among the country’s four mobile operators, with a subscriber base of some three million customers. This represents a market share of over 57 percent.
